by contrast the close-up is incongruous with the experience of people actually attending. i expect broadcasters think close-ups allow viewers to see (and maybe to ‘feel’) the emotions of participants - but they often end up feeling intrusive and detract from the ceremonial.

if the purpose of broadcasts like this is to make the viewer feel like you are there, the wide shot achieves that - you can see the surroundings, the atmosphere, and your view is similar to that of someone in the congregation.
