Excited to say that from next week I’ll be joining the talented audio team at
@Telegraph
as a podcast producer. I’m going back to doing what I’ve enjoyed most in my journalism career, making news pods! After an insightful few months freelancing, I’m looking forward to starting ✨
I aspire to be as petty as Lidl in their on-going beef with Marks and Spencer. They’ve written to the ice cream parlour Fabio’s who were prevented from selling branded Percy Pig ice cream, and told them can use Lidl’s version of the sweet which they’ve called Henry Hippo 👀
A lot of the media is obsessed with the idea of having celebs fronting everything, including documentaries which could be presented by journalists who have done the background work. If the story is important enough, and it’s told well, they don’t really care who the presenter is.
So
@thetimes
are running a week long summer academy for aspiring young journalists with access to their newsrooms and talks from senior journalists for… *checks notes* 400 pound 🥴 And we wonder why our industry is still so inaccessible for people from working-class backgrounds?
This story has highlighted the many issues we have in British journalism when it comes to duty of care to contributors and training on mental health reporting. This woman is clearly mentally unwell + vulnerable. Journalists need to stop giving her air time so they can go ‘viral’
*WORLD EXCLUSIVE*
The real-life Martha from Baby Reindeer breaks cover and gives me her first TV interview about the smash hit Netflix show.
Fiona Harvey wants to have her say & ‘set the record straight.’
Is she a psycho stalker?

Daniel Sloss is not just a fantastic comedian, but he stands by his words. He was the only comedian to speak up without anonymity. Legend 👏

Over 2 years ago I was in a bad place. I was struggling with anxiety and depression after losing my brother. I barely left the house. I applied for two weeks of work experience at my local BBC station which led me to the journalism apprenticeship. Now I’m a fully fledged journo
Personally, I would love to see more TV documentaries fronted by reality tv stars with no journalism training pretending that they've done the entire investigation. I just don't think we have enough of it at the moment 👍
Someone made a fake tweet saying Paul Dano and Robert Pattinson were going to be in an LGBTQ+ remake of Pride and Prejudice and fake news has never had more of an impact on my life
We often see people in the media industry talking about their successes on socials. We see when people have got a new job, or when they’ve won an award for their work. We don’t see when they’re struggling with mental health, or facing rejection. It’s a tough industry sometimes.
Something that I’ve learnt after watching
#FreshMovie
: Don’t go on a trip to an unknown location with a dude you’ve only known for a few days who isn’t on social media and you met in a supermarket, even if he is extremely good looking…
Tomorrow would have been my little brother’s 23rd birthday. I dread it every year tbh but this year, can you all text your brothers and sisters to tell them you love them pls? 💖
I truly believe the best quality a journalist can have is empathy. Some of the best journalists I know have this quality in abundance. Listening and being sensitive to other communities or people with different experiences to you shouldn’t come second to getting a story out ❌
Not sure why anyone would think it’s ok to charge a young journalist 20 odd pound to learn how to pitch an idea. My DMs are open and I’m happy to offer advice and support to young broadcast journalists who need it 🙌
To replicate working in NBH from my own home, I wait at least 15 mins at the bottom of the stairs before climbing them, I've started scanning my pass against the backdoor to let my dog in and out, and I've called my dining room the 'Louis Theorux' meeting room (bookable online)
I have to say I’ve found this week really tough, especially working in news. So much has happened, and there’s been a lot to process so sending love to any of my journalist friends who are feeling the same ❤️
I’ve been thinking about this the last few days and how depressing it is. Coming from a working-class background, I was able to get into the journalism industry through the BBC apprenticeship. Over the years, I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome in my job
After a rollercoaster of a year, this is the honestly the best news I could have received ✨
I’ve worked really hard to be where I am today, but couldn’t have done it without the support of my wonderful family, friends + colleagues.
Thank you

Well done to
@georgia_coan
who is a Broadcast Journalist for

podcasts and a member of the 30 Under 30 list, 2021.

She spoke to us after she found out she was on the list about what it means for her⬇️
Our BBC investigation into online personality
#AndrewTate
comes out next week. Being from Luton, I’ve been following Tate’s rise since 2019. He grew up on the same council estate as my mum. It’s a place with high levels of poverty, so far removed from the life Tate showed online.
I'm looking to build up a contact list of young BBC producers and journalists working in local radio or regional television. If you'd be interested in connecting, drop me a DM or email georgia.coan

Eight years since my younger brother Elliot died. I miss him every second of everyday. If you can, pls take part in an random act of kindness today in Elliot’s memory, even if you just text a loved one to tell them you love them. Just put a bit more kindness into the world rn❤️
So, I’ve made the decision to take voluntary redundancy from my staff job at BBC to go✨freelance✨. Despite some difficult moments in the last few years with restructures and changes, I am so grateful to BBC for the opportunities I’ve had since joining as an apprentice in 2016…
People who work in the media industry and come from privilege (aka went to private school, took expensive masters degrees) need to start acknowledging it. And need to stop using that privilege to shame other people in the industry who haven’t been afforded the same opportunities
I started my journalism career in local radio and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. You’ll meet some of the hardest working people in local newsrooms because they do so much with very little. They get to stories before anyone else due to their relationship with audiences
For the last few months I’ve been getting treatment for my OCD. Today I did something I never thought I’d be able to do again. Thanks to my amazing therapist and exposure therapy, I’m so close to living a ‘normal life’. For anyone struggling, pls know recovery is possible ❤️
Reminder to journalists (specifically those from underrepresented backgrounds) to know your own worth, to realise how valuable you are, and not to let people make you feel less than you are or overlook you. Shine your own buttons, cause not everyone will shine them for you✨
The BBC apprenticeships are now open, including the fast track journalism apprenticeship and the new advanced journalism apprenticeship. Please feel free to drop me a DM if you need any advice or support applying this year 📧
@BBCGetIn
It still angers me that so many media awards make you pay to enter. If you’re a young producer/journalist from a working-class background, you aren’t going to be able to pay 40 quid for an entry. Therefore, your entries aren’t going to be very diverse or reflective of new talent.
So it’s
#WorldMentalHealthDay
, and thought I’d share a rather personal blog post and talk about something I’ve never spoken about before. I’m nervous to share it but I’ve been ashamed for too long now and it’s important to talk 🗣
I won’t tolerate Luton slander on the timeline. We have six Greggs (two in the same shopping centre), we have the second biggest carnival after Notting Hill and we’re the birth place of a Great British Bake Off winner…
My new favourite thing is instagram influencers telling us all to appreciate the small things in life whilst pictured lounging by an infinity pool in a European villa with a sea view
Today will be nine years since my little brother Elliot passed away. I miss him more with every year. Remember to take the time to tell the people you love how much they mean to you ❤️
It’s so important to have working class voices in newsrooms and on tv/radio. News progs need to represent communities outside of London and people from working class towns which are often forgotten. When you have journalists from these backgrounds , there’s more diverse ideas💡
Today will be seven years since we lost my younger brother Elliot after complications during a routine operation. Like the current pandemic, none of us expected it to happen and many families will be going through the same pain as ours right now. Grief in lockdown is tough 💔
Today would have been my brother Elliot’s 25th birthday. I miss him every minute of the day. I wish he could have experienced all the wonderful things life still had to offer him. Tell your siblings how much you love them❤️
It's just sad when you see young journalists publically tearing each other down and being unpleasant when they could be supporting each other and celebrating their successes together. We have nothing to lose by supporting other young people in the media industry 🙌
Earlier this year, I was struggling with my mental health. I was burnt out and emotionally exhausted. I felt like I wasn’t good enough. I contemplated leaving the industry, despite the fact I’d worked so bloody hard to get here. I was worried it wouldn’t get better, but it did ❤️
For anyone that didn’t get on the BBC apprenticeship scheme this year, pls don’t give up. I was rejected the first time I applied, and then got on the scheme in 2016. I made sure to use that time in between to get more experience, start a blog, and teach myself some new skills ✨
Excited to say I’ve met a guy on tinder. He is career driven, and has lots of money. I couldn’t believe my luck when he invited me on his private jet for our first date. He has lots of enemies apparently, which is worrying but, the 20 grand I took out in loans is keeping him safe
It’s all well and good creating entry level schemes to get more diverse people into the journalism/media industry, but it’s also important to put efforts into retaining those staff members once they’re in by developing them, listening to them + creating an inclusive environment🗣
In journalism, it is NOT the job of our Black and Asian colleagues to educate us on racism or tell us why stories about their communities are important. It’s on us to educate ourselves through the resources which are available to us and to always push for diversity in our stories
Honestly,
@CliveMyrieBBC
is a broadcasting legend. His reporting is so full of empathy and understanding for the people around him, yet he still remains balanced and composed. A true masterclass in what journalism should be, especially during such a terrifying time for Ukraine 🇺🇦
I find it interesting when journalists complain that underserved audiences won’t speak to them for stories. Lots of journos who specialise in stories for underserved communities have built trust over time, and often from the ground up due to negative past experiences with media
I've had a few young aspiring journalists reach out to me recently so just wanted to share this blog post I wrote the other year about getting into journalism without a degree and my journey into the industry ✏️
I’m looking to mentor someone who is trying to get into the journalism industry or has just started their career in an entry level role. I’d particularly like to support those from underrepresented backgrounds, so if you think I could offer you some advice, please drop me a DM 📧
The fact that some journalists in 2024 are still using the dated term ‘committed suicide’ in their reporting, despite clear media guidelines from
@samaritans
, is just lazy journalism. Just do better 🗣️
FYI, I’m seeing a lot of tweets about journalism degrees tonight. Yes, most jobs like you to have an NCTJ so you know the basics of media law, public affairs etc. But you do NOT need a degree, OR a masters to be a journalist. My BBC Apprenticeship taught me all I needed to know🙌
Really proud to have been a part of this journey with
@higeorgeshelley
and have the chance to share my own story of losing my little brother Elliot. It’s so important that the subject of grief, especially sibling loss, is highlighted 🙌💕
