It's a rudimentary blog at this stage, but I'm blogging on strictly computer science related topics at Readers will have to bear with me for now for my limited skills with Wordpress, github, etc.

Instead of complaining about the horrible state of the USA, people on countries that are nominally big fans of Ukraine should be sending everything they can to UKR right now. Australia should break AUKUS and give the money to Ukraine instead. Europeans should take the gloves off.

This is a weird place to find Jacob Bacharach's deleted thread from a while back (with the serial numbers filed off). But it's such a good (if snarky) thread and lives rent free in my head. Worth reading in its entirety:.

Common trope in media criticism: the media is/was structurally incapable of noting that the GOP is no longer a "normal" political party. Wrong! The GOP is a normal political party. It's the Democrats that are something else. The GOP is a distasteful, racist, weird party. Sure.

My take on Gen AI is that while it's mostly bullshit, so are most white-collar jobs. They are middle-class welfare for compliant college-educated people. Serious "B Ark" material (in Douglas Adams) terms.

@AlokChanani The dirty secret is that while AI is essentially bullshit, so are most white-collar jobs. You can't automate away plumbers because everyone notices water all over the floor when they do a bad job, but if you automate away someone who writes reports no-one reads, no one cares.

We perform cruelties upon the future, such as tolerating global warming and environmental degradation, but worse, I've learned today that the unfortunate souls in 2114 are going to have to suffer from a *new* Margaret Atwood book.

Is the term "mainframe computer" meaningful in 2025? My wife and I are reading/have read Caledonian Road and the protagonist's son is referred to have a mainframe computer in his bedroom 🤣 but when she asked me what it meant I couldn't adequately give a precise, non-vibe reply?.

Is the book "Abundance" any good? I started to leaf through it and then put it down rapidly when it started rhapsodising about vertical farming, which gave me (perhaps unfairly) the impression it was going to be stuffed with superficially plausible optimistic nonsense.

I suppose a hybrid model combining formal spec and LLMs isn't terrible, but I find the idea unsatisfying (pun intended), since the code is likely only as good as what it can find and adapt in the training corpus.

not just getting some copypasta nonsense you don't have infrastructure. Not saying the latter can't be useful - just that you'd never want to embed it deeply in a complex system if you don't have the resources to hand check every last thing it does.

To me it seems that a code synthesis tool is *infrastructural* in a way that Gen AI isn't. Even a relatively banal bit of code generated from a spec or series of examples can be hugely useful in a larger tool - but if you need a human in the loop to make sure that you're not . .

I love my @Dell monitor and its KVM - does 99% of what I need from a KVM - but the lack of dedicated switching buttons is *insane*. I've got the "press button 2 3 times then button 3 once" for DP->USB-C (and a different count for the reverse) in muscle memory, but come on!.

I wish this would come back. 2025 needs a fight between these guys. It's intriguing on so many levels: both are incredible weirdos, and Zuck seems to have fallen off in BJJ (while Musk seems slightly less degenerate in lifestyle than he was, though it's a low bar).

Fight Recap:. I joked on X about fighting Zuck. Zuck then said ā€œSEND ME LOCATIONā€ . Italy graciously offered a Colosseum. Zuck declined. I suggested his home as ā€œsafe spaceā€. Tragically, he was ahem ā€œtravelingā€. Is there anywhere he will fight?.

Curious if the Samsung devices that have Mediatek processors in them can run SVE instructions? Or is this fused off or disabled at boot or in kernel to preserve s/w compatibility between the more usual Qualcomm (no SVE) devices in Samsung's offerings?.

to be very important to her constituents. When I was doing customer-facing work in tech, I could almost dissociate and watch myself answer "the usual questions" almost autonomously. If she can't even be bothered to wheel out a few platitudes, she obviously doesn't give a shit.

someone might say "hey, she should have gone to a meeting or office hours and presented her concerns there", Plibersiek is clearly *completely unready* to answer this question with anything coherent. She clearly doesn't have any pre-prepared answer to a question that is known . .
