The mess that Avanti have got themselves into over Rest Day working and rostered Sundays makes me smile. The whole thing is about Management (and the DfT) not heeding the lessons of history. /1

This has become a real issue. It’s difficult to see a solution apart from re- thinking train and station staffing. https://t.co/WBbvzuzzdo

Have I said how much I hate Couriers? Parcel due to be delivered by @DPDCare today. We stay in at the appointed time (1514 to 1615). Text at 1556 saying “sorry we missed you. Moses, your driver, will call again tomorrow. Photo of some premises half a mile from us. Hopeless.

Reading the Gatwick announcements I haven’t been able find any reference to the effect on rail services. E Croydon and Windmill Jcn operate at near capacity. Additional trains will need an eye-watering re-modelling investment. Anyone any better idea of what’s in the price?

@afneil This week I was at a data centre conference in Frankfurt. I can tell you, it is the first time in a long time that I've been in a room with European business leaders where people are saying they need to copy the UK. People there were concerned about EU AI regulation - it makes

Meeting in London today. Buxted car park used to be so full pre-Covid they built an extension. Now the new Car park is used for PWay crap and the old one is half empty on a Thursday. WFH or has the Uckfield become so unreliable it’s driven away business?

Today would have been Richard Parry-Jones 74th birthday. The best Chairman at Network Rail that I had the opportunity to work with. Rest in peace Richard.

On this day in 1978, legendary The Who drummer Keith Moon passed away. Here’s Keith with The Who performing their classic "Baba O'Riley" at Shepperton Studios, months before his death. This was Keith Moon's last performance.

Pleased to see so many ex Southern railway operators together at Gwyn Jones funeral today. A Deputy Chief Controller, it was always good to walk into Control when the chips were down and see Gwyn in the seat. Rest in peace DCC.

The Who performing "Baba O'Riley" at Hyde Park (2015) For those who don't know, the drummer is none other than Ringo Starr's son! Amazing. Baba O'Riley is one of the greatest masterpieces ever written.

Still no trains south of Crowborough on the Uckfield Line. @NetworkRailSE and @SouthernRailUK are you going for the record of longest signal failure ever ?

Yes it’s an admission that things have gone horribly wrong since the pandemic, but it’s now the only way to provide stability and reliability to the end customer. 5/5

Surely the time has come to bring back some stability to the service we offer the end customer. We need to adjust the timetable to a level that the industry can reliably run without reliance on premium payments of money it simply doesn’t have. 4/5

The Trades Unions are happy to help out by offering free day working at an even higher premium. But, in the highly unlikely event that Mment and the TUs fall out over the next pay award, that goodwill can just as easily disappear leaving behind chaos. 3/5m

Not for pay harmonisation, not for the massive recruitment and training drive needed to ensure there are sufficient crews available to reliably operate the present train plan. 2/5

Another week/weekend of cancellations and alterations because of crew shortage. The latest TSC spelt out very clearly to those who hadn’t yet got the message. THERE IS NO MONEY. 1/5

Peter Rayner’s funeral yesterday, well attended as you’d expect of such a legend. Full and standing in railway parlance. Rest in peace Guv.

Good to see Neil Young again. Looking slightly younger than Glastonbury, but you’d recognise the voice anywhere. @BBC
