Our hearts are heavy to report that G&G columnist Julia Reed passed away today from cancer. Her larger-than-life presence was only matched by her talents and tireless advocating for the Mississippi Delta. Here,
@jmeacham
shares a remembrance of his friend:
This one hits hard. Singer-songwriter John Prine, 73, died Tuesday in Nashville after being hospitalized with Covid-19 symptoms. A 4-time Grammy winner, Prine was one of the most influential voices in country and folk music and beyond—one of the true greats. We mourn his passing.
Actor and San Antonio native Jared Padalecki on kindness, "Texas values," and what it means to play the titular role in the Walker, Texas Ranger reboot:
Remembering—and already missing—the legendary Jimmy Buffett, who died yesterday. In 2008, he wrote an article for G&G about a whirlwind trip to Mali. It's a great way to recall his music, humor, and sense of adventure:
We mourn the passing of George H.W. Bush, the 41st president who died Friday at 94. In this passage from his biography, historian
@jmeacham
recounts how Bush made Texas his home, was shaped by the state, and started his life of public service there.
We’re saddened to hear of the passing of the country music legend Charley Pride, who died of COVID-19 complications at 86. The late Randall Kenan recalled the singer in this essay for G&G:
We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of actor Burt Reynolds at age 82. “If you hang onto something long enough, it will come back in style. Like me,” the Golden-Globe winner once said. And Burt never really went out of style. Rest in peace.
"Don’t expect people to reciprocate all the time, on anything you’re giving. Try to be a better listener, because I wasn’t a very good listener early on. And always pack a swimsuit—you never know when you’re gonna need it." -

The world just lost a soulful, powerful, and memorable voice. While we'll always have her music, we are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Memphis-born Aretha Franklin at the age of 76. Rest in peace, Aretha.
G&G contributing editor and columnist Julia Reed, who died on Friday, left behind an exceptional (and often rollicking) body of work. The world will be a much duller place without her. Read our compilation of some of her best columns and features:

We couldn’t be happier for Phil Mickelson, who won the PGA Championship and became, at 50, the oldest to win a major golf tournament. The fact he did it on South Carolina’s beautiful Kiawah Island (G&G’s backyard) makes it even sweeter. Congrats, Lefty! (Photo: Matt York/AP)

"I can cook for a TV show. I can cook for my family. I can cook for a book. I can be a teacher. I can be a voice. Or I can just be a cook, to provide food aid to people in a moment. You see? If you’re a cook, you can be all those things." -

"If you want the girl, study. When you utter some lines, mean them. Travel with a winch and a chain. Go after maimed dogs. Take the woman you are in front of very, very seriously."
We are heartbroken to hear of the death of Leslie Jordan, the Tennessee-born actor. In a 2020 article for G&G, Jordan reflected on his role as quarantine-era comic relief. “People now know me for me,” he said. That “me” was positively inimitable, and we will miss him dearly.
"I think this flag represents all of us... It’s the guy pumping gas while he’s out trying to remove tree limbs from his neighborhood after the storm. And it’s you. The flag represents Americans, shredded to pieces but still plugging away.”
