GDS is officially 6 years old today - seems an apt day to be my last
@gdsteam
and in the civil service. Off to the US again for some new adventures but will always be proud to have been part of all things GDS. Onwards!
Watching
#FyreFestivalNetflix
should be recommend viewing for all Brits- come 29th March you too will be stuck on a small island with no food and the dawning realisation you've been sold a false dream so it's good to get prepared!
Conversations with my husband
@dps
Me: I've got a great idea for a product
David: Oh yeah, I've got a patent on that. From ten years ago.
Me: .........
I have never been more convinced that the next generation will see the destruction of civilization as we know it, than I am after today's playtime. I mean who starts a jigsaw from the middle and does the corners last? Its just chaos. What will become of our children?!
My daughter isn't old enough to vote yet but she chose to wear her Irish top in solidarity today. Please vote Yes for her and all the other girls who want to grow up to have choice over their own bodies.

Interesting thoughts on leadership from
@gdsteam
. "The best digital leaders are humble and collaborative, yet ambitious and creative" -
@simoneverest
accurately describing himself and his great, understated leadership even if he doesn't realise it.
"The best digital leaders are humble and collaborative, yet ambitious and creative." -
@simoneverest
. Find out what colleagues across government believe makes a good digital leader:
This kind of constant maligning and undermining had a big impact on my decision to quit the civil service. My colleagues were universally dedicated, hard working and went above and beyond to deliver - but this crap makes it hard to keep and attract talent (see previous tweet)
Really glad to see initiatives like this, particularly since I've currently chosen to take a break from my career to look after the small ones. As far as I'm aware it hasn't involved my brain being removed and my tiny bosses give me great perf scores, most of the time.
Did you know that women lose nearly 40% of their earning power when they spend 3+ years out of the workforce?
Proud to say that
@stripe
is partnering with
@PathFWD
to help women who take a career break re-enter the workforce. Read more here:

figure skating pairs. "why do only the girls get lifted? That's not fair". I love the way she makes me rethink things I just take for granted...
It is the universal law of children's birthdays that no matter how much you think you've planned in advance you will still be building a sandpit in the garden at 8.30pm the night before, and trying to remember where you hid the presents so his sister wouldn't find them....
I'm an engineer at heart, which means my eyes are rarely pointed up towards the clouds. I'm usually looking down at the pothole in front of me.
But in my biggest, broadest vision, 5-10 years from now, building tech for the State of California would carry the prestige of Google.
5 year old overtired and crying at bedtime.
@dps
went and told her a joke. Quiets down but still whimpering. 5 mins later - sudden hysterical laughter. By jove I think she's got it!
Yesterday my daughter (nearly 4) went on the
#WomensMarchSF
. Tonight: "It's time to get out of the bath!" "No Daddy, it's not your choice, no man can tell me what to do! On the march they told me 'your body, your choice'."

OH: I can't believe my

case warped after just 15 mins in the California sun. Actually... I guess I can believe it, it was made by folks who live in Norway.
Yet another argument for diversity in user testing....
Buy this for your relatives this holiday season and help the black economy! Inspired by this I'm changing all my passwords and installing a password manager. "In one easy & organised location"...🤦
If you’re into building digital communities, are great at setting up cross-sector collaboration, and want to make the online world a safer place, come join my team at DCMS.

I'm sure the individuals are lovely - but customer service which is designed to mean you can't deal with the issue online but where they hang up if you try to call is terrible and thats what they're offering right now. Not acceptable.
I'm very fortunate that this lockdown is proving to me that I love my husband even more with increased proximity. But if he says one more time, with an ironic he'd tilt, as we watch a TV show, "why aren't they social distancing" I may need to quarantine him for his own good.
Such a loss, not just to his friends and family but to the whole country. Times like this are when we need dedicated, smart and effective public servants like Jeremy more than ever.
Trying to get a credit card. All our income and savings and house are jointly owned but as sahm (not legally allowed to work) told by bank agent "would be best if your husband paid you an allowance to prove you're allowed to spend the money" to qualify🤦. US banking in 2019...
So he drove 260 miles without needing to stop to do a wee but he couldn't drive back from Barnard castle without stopping for a wee and a little walk around? Got it!
Ordered beer as part of
@Instacart
order. Instead of 100 other possible beers the shopper replaced it with non-alcoholic beer. I mean really?! And apparently the only solution is for me to schlep it to the store and see if they'll return it. Way to make my life harder!

As a Brit living in the US I've signed as have many of my Brit friends. Possibly Brits who've chosen to live abroad have a more open world view and an appreciation of the craziness of cutting ourselves off from the world and therefore are pretty likely to want to sign?
My 4yr old came home yesterday saying she wished she was a boy so she could be a fireman. When I said girls can be firefighters too she said ‘but I’ve seen in books they are all boys and I don’t want to be the only girl.’ Any good vids/books I can show her?

My local cooking school is offering an "English Christmas dinner" class. Forget the fact we eat turkey not beef and Yorkshire pudding - no English person eats lettuce for Christmas dinner!

Fantastic news for you and for
@yourcroydon
you'll rock that like you do everything. But oh my goodness that really does feel like the end of an era. What a loss for
@gdsteam
. Thank you so much for everything you delivered and all the people you helped reach their potential too.

Agree, impressive performance not many seasoned SCS could manage and great to hear someone making these points so precisely. But not sure I'd class
@tomskitomski
as a grown up... !
Obviously this is a touching story of youthful determination but am I the only only one siding with momma bear who's clearly shouting a version of "for the last time stop messing about, we're late for school, get up here now or I'm calling Santa" at him. No, just me?
Just finished watching
#SunderlandTilIDie
and now feeling so nostalgic for home and Wearside. Beautifully shot and fantastic storytelling. Gripping even for an anti-football fan like me.
Given the political mayhem, there have been very few times over the last couple of years when I've been sad to no longer be a civil servant but this exquisite piece of civil service drafting is making me nostalgic...
@marxculture
Yup, didn't get paid for 3 months after returning from maternity leave. Am still owed expenses that I didn't get reimbursed before I left. Doesn't bode well, does it...
