This is hands down one of the rarest volcano footage I’ve ever seen and possibly the first and only drone shot in the world showing a volcanic fissure opening up in real time. This was captured in Iceland two days ago by Jakob Vegerfors - shared with his permission.

If you look closely at the seismogram from
@naspmon
station faf, you can see a final burst of small earthquakes as the magma forced its way to the surface.
Even better, they are located just beneath the eruption site where we now know the magma is! Which all makes sense. 🌋

Both FAF and HRV are our
@naspmon
stations streaming data to the
@Vedurstofan
and crucial to the monitoring.
The 2022 and 2023 eruptions seem very similar: their geochemistry, their exponential decline in effusion rate, the volumes (~11 mil. m^3, ~16 mil. m^3), their length (18 days, 26 days), and now, the tremor patterns as the eruption ended.

Lava is estimated to fill the valley and overflow to the SW after about 12 days of eruption (we are 6 days in). Here are two model results for 12 and 17 days with a constant flow of ~5.8 m³/s. Will be interesting to see how accurate Mr. Lava Loba’s forecast turns out to be.

Hi Ken, the area is NNE from Nátthagi, just 1km east of Meradalir. Cracks are oriented parallel to the dike intrusion. We flew yesterday with our fixed-wing and covered around 3km2.
