Elucidating the role of microglia in acute brain injuries, neurovascular function and sex differences in development, maturity and disease @BIG_Center_UVA

7 years ago, at my PhD Graduation, my Advisor gave me this picture of my last days in grad school grading papers, father-ing and finishing up my Thesis. His point was that Grad school had successfully built into me some level of multi-tasking that would be vital for success 🤓😎

A friend of mine who is good at web design is looking for opportunities to help design their websites for reasonable pay. If you're a new (or old) lab interested in designing your (lab) website, let me know and I can connect you. Thank you.

@conn_pann_fun Lab postdoc @Luke_Dunaway, PhD, studies the intersection of iron metabolism and cardiovascular disease in anemia and chronic kidney disease. A hiker and boulderer, he will finish hiking all of Shenandoah NP this year.

Remember, whatever your political inclination, Charlie Kirk's murder will likely be *even more* disheartening to Conservative (undergrad, grad and postdocs) in our labs, classes and campus buildings. Please, be inclusive of their feelings in your comments, actions and emails.

Two new studies highlight microglial pruning of astrocyte processes: the first by @Masha_P_K in Neuron: https://t.co/DBQHNzAiiq and the second by @KateReissner in Cell Reports: https://t.co/fSdk1y8IUb. Which glia is the alpha glia dominating the others? 🤷🏾

Gu et al. showed that in rats fed a high-salt diet, reactive microglia accumulate around vasopressin-secreting neurons, phagocytosing astrocytic elements and pruning astrocytes. This causes glutamate...

We are fascinated by P2RY12 in the lab but Aida took our pursuit of it to a different angle and I am very intrigued at what this could mean for all sorts of pathologies for which P2RY12 expression is diminished or lost. What her space...
Excited to share my first-author paper in Glia! 🧠✨ P2RY12 is a classic marker of homeostatic microglia — but what is it actually doing? We show it transcriptionally regulates metabolism, antioxidant defenses & inflammatory responses. 📄

New work from @AndyShih_Lab's group is incredible & shows that some of the in vivo imaging done to study neurovascular physiology is literally just "scratching the surface" as this deep imaging shows differences in flow regulation in deeper brain regions:

How it started (with Dept. Chair in ‘18 as an Assist. Prof.); Where we are (with my Dept. Chair and wife in ‘25 as a tenured Prof.) with a "handoff"? 😂 in between in ‘22. It is delightful and rewarding (hence the smiles) to do what we do with leaders who lead us well. Thankful🙏🏾

This guy is on fire. Postdoc fellowship…Check. Career development award…Check. co-author publication in May...Check. co-author publication June...Check. First author publication in Nature Communications in July…Check. Check it out. Great stuff, Tré💪🏾👏🏾
Finally online today: https://t.co/jPhRzj4E6N Thanks to all involved, especially @eyolab and the phenomenal undergraduates I've had the privilege to mentor. Also check out two of my other recent publications. 1) https://t.co/0RxCpWwx0U 2)

I’m usually a fan of term limits but yesterday I abandoned my fandom with the declaration "Ukpong Eyo promoted from Associate Professor without tenure to tenured Associate Professor without term". Too many mentors, mentees, friends, family, companion and God to thank 🙏🏾.Let’s Go!

To wrap up this series, this year (2025) in a soon-to-be-published study, @astrecyte is revealing that microglia (rather than BAMs) maintain basal capillary tone through vasodilatory COX1 signaling. A pre-print is available here: https://t.co/UyctTUg7Av.🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging

In 2024, in a study led @KoichiHaruwaka from the @LongJun_Wu lab, in vivo imaging was used to show that microglia facilitate neuronal activity following emergence from anesthesia (reminiscent of sleep-to-wake state transition). : https://t.co/DWGClVF4Fy.🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging

Still in 2023, in a study led @SimonTSchafer from the Gage lab, a human brain-organiod-transplant-into-mice system was used to monitor human microglia in vivo. The beautiful system was used to model microglial dynamics in ASD: https://t.co/AnZ1XEjA8x.🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging

In 2021, in a study led by Császár from the Denés lab, in vivo imaging, in part, was used to show that microglia regulate cerebral blood flow in neurovascular coupling with important roles for its P2RY12 receptors in the process: https://t.co/W5HwRjUEcJ.🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging

Still in 2021, in a study led by @Bishtkanchan8 from @eyolab, microglial soma interactions with the vasculature were described and shown to require vascular purine release from Panx1 channels to recruit microglia through P2RY12: https://t.co/S7omLJec72.🤩#20YearsInVivoMGImaging
