Left my job to focus 100% on math, CS and ML for a while. Haven't got a precise end goal in mind at the moment but I think something will emerge. Here's the stuff I am learning, learning process, etc: 1/n

The UK was home to some of the world's most important technoscientific discoveries. But the architecture through which we currently pursue research is broken. Lovelace is the blueprint for fixing it. Now is the time to make it a reality. @Lyan82 and @AnEmergentI
New from @instituteGC: a proposal for Lovelace Disruptive Invention Labs Is a better science possible, & how can we build it? 🏗️ Britain should pioneer a complementary model for research at the intersection of science & engineering – inverting core assumptions of modern public

Will be joining the Hardware is not Hard Meetup on Nov 18th again with @leopauly. The last one was really fun, lots of interesting people :) https://t.co/smtD6QCw9Y

"Britain created the modern world. "This country gave us so much of what not only we, but the world, values today." @matthewclifford reminds us that Britain has an exceptional history - so we can have an exceptional future. 🚀🇬🇧🚀

"We must again turn to our technical men and to our scientists and rely on them to take the lead as they did when this country’s industrial wealth was first built up … In the battle before us our mechanical engineers are our armoured divisions." - Herbert Morrison, June 1947
“I would much prefer a world where Britons are producing the future.” It’s “sad” that 'Anglofuturism' has become associated with conservatism when it’s “actually aggressively forward looking”, says Anglofuturist podcast host, @CalumDrysdale. @HugoRifkind

You could start a very interesting research lab on the founding principle that researchers must build all their own equipment. It would cost 1000x less than a typical lab while creating scientists with very unique skills - "hardware scientists" as @CalumDrysdale and I call them

Discord = billions of Fallout vaults each running a different experiment in group norms. The drug channel that killed my friend amplified the most extreme self-destruction. In a random learning channel I met ppl+ideas that bettered my life in more ways than I can express
to tell you the truth. while it’s funny to make fun of discord, it is a completely invaluable platform. the creation of its cultural islands, the great variance of ideologies it has produced, are signs of a great success. in a homogenizing world it is remarkable to breed new life

is there a new meta for fast + effective textbook learning or is this still it? - paste socratic tutor prompt - ./pdf_cp.py --pages 30-40 book.pdf - paste pages you want to learn into chat - get grilled by GPT
how 2 learn 1. open chatbot 2. copy paste: "Always respond in the Socratic style. Never give me the answer, always try to just ask the right question to get me to learn and think for myself. Break the problem into parts. Ask one question at a time." 3. ?? 4. congrats u learned

Uni research has a curiously feudal character - PhDs are serfs serving their lord (supervisor). Your quality of life depends on the soil quality (research domain). Postdocs are knights travelling around for service. One day you hope to become a lord of your own little lab.

checked my DIY pipette on an analytical balance yesterday and found that it passes ISO 8655 pipetting standards for volumes >= 100ul while costing 10x less than a commercial pipette 💪

Fortunately we do have this in biotech because we benefit massively from automation and miniaturization (cells are small!) - reductions in input costs, expensive labor costs, lab sw footage needed, etc, etc. Just need to have the will to build out and make the jump off the lab
Nearly a year since my manifesto. Most people don't realize how little advanced technology actually helps. There is no magic bullet. We have no Moore's Law to save us in the metal making world.

extremely grateful to @hugo_marins for merging a very nice update to @remnote's incremental reading plugin which fixes a long list of bugs and improves the UX significantly :)

Opened old note taking apps for the first time in a while over the weekend and scrolled through old stuff and it's just a graveyard of grand plans that I stuck to for 2 weeks and abandoned. Only thing I've ever stuck to long term is meandering search driven by interests.
