@josephhmanson I'm quite pessimistic because once the collections are gone, then it'll be hard to build the science back up. Also, I think that the field is so captured that even if NAGPRA was overturned, the academics would be still reburying, repatriating, and censoring!.

@clairlemon The general trends don't tell the whole story. Australia outperforms Canada and the UK (both have universal healthcare). Australian aborigines live 8 yrs shorter than white Australians. Asians in the US, who don't have universal healthcare, have the same longevity as Australians.

@HeidiBriones It was actually considered odd and even wrong at the time, which is why they lied about her age to the preacher. The marriage made the national news and, fortunately, led to changes in marriage laws. But, to portray this as the norm in 1930s America isn't really accurate.

@AJA_Cortes I lived in Cairo from 1995 to 1996. Along the Nile and in the Garden District there was quite a lot of green. In old buildings, you could find blocks with ancient hieroglyphs. The Neo Baroque style architecture was attractive. Here's a photo of the neighborhood I first lived in:

@MJM0187 The skull I'm holding was wrapped. It was likely done to distinguish the tribe from other tribes and related to status. Cranial modification was a nearly worldwide phenomenon. But, it wasn't present in Sub-Saharan Africa, there we find other modifications, like dental filing.

I've been examining skeletal remains for over 25 years and just last week saw my first-ever trephination (a hole scraped into the human skull, possibly for medical purposes). The skull also has a healed facial injury. Looking forward to learning more about these ancient peoples.

@clairlemon It's difficult to assess age at death, but there's good evidence that for most of prehistory human's longevity was similar to apes -- mid-30s to early 40s. The # 1 cause of death was dental disease, resulting in blood poisoning. Here's a photo: teeth worn to stubs and abscesses.

At the last NAGPRA meeting, I asked about adherence to legal definitions for repatriations. The response I got demonstrates that repatriation overreach has become the norm; everything -- from spark plugs to feces -- is treated as sacred. More on this absurdity in my next article!
