In the next 5 years, Paris is set to overtake both London and New York City in terms of metro length, thanks to over 200 km of tracks currently under construction. In the 2030s, they’re gonna make sure London and New York never catch up again….

@RM_Transit Actually, probably even more than that — they’re already planning the next phase of their master plan (2030–2040). And that’s not even counting the dozens of kilometers of trams and BRTs… truly impressive!

France is very close to reaching 1,000 km of tracks across more than 100 modern tram lines built since the 1980s. Why hasn’t Quebec, which always wants to be Frenchier than the French, followed their example this time?.

The French speaking world has been building an absurd number of trams over the last 2 decades, and yet somehow Ontario with all its delivery problems is going to have five modern tram lines before before Quebec has 1!.

Texas could get 330 miles and 278 stations of automated metro for what it currently spends on roads and highways, btw.

5/5.Also, I think the OP misses the point about automation:.It doesn’t eliminate 100% of labor costs, in fact, it doesn’t reduce them by much. You still need staff for maintenance and supervision. But what it does bring is increased frequency & flexibility. That’s the real value!.

3/5.In Paris 🇫🇷, when Line 1 was automated, workers were promoted and transferred to other lines or to the rapidly expanding tramway network. This approach has been replicated across France — workers are often excited to see their systems upgraded!.

2/5.Short answer: By respecting what unions are actually for — defending workers' rights. If you try to bypass unions and toss workers aside, of course they’ll block the project. ➡️ Negotiate with them, listen to their (legitimate) concerns, and find a solid compromise….

1/5.I see a lot of comments about unions and workers' rights under this post:. In Europe, many lines have been fully automated with ZERO (!!!) protests — despite MUCH stronger unions and labor protections. How is that possible? THREAD 🧵⬇️.

Cost to automate DC Metro - $5.65B. Annual labor cost to run trains - $951.6M. Automation would pay for itself in six years, and we could spend that money on more bus and train service w/o needing a bigger budget. A no-brainer.

American companies abroad are perfectly aware of the efficiency of public transit and passenger rail, and have no trouble adapting to their European customers’ preferences. So why not do the same at home?.

France in particular is eager to share its expertise in infrastructure development and has built strong partnerships with the MENA region and West Africa over many years. It has been involved in nearly every rail development project in the area — for the better.
