Closing Duke's Herbarium: A fear of long-term climate commitment?
dukechronicle.com
Without the Herbarium, and support for future faculty in biodiversity research, Duke’s reputation in this area will wither on the vine.

Love it! You are becoming an expert yourself @leslievosshall! I should send you a plant press and we can amass a global collection.

Thrilling to have Bill Ogren explaining the work he did 50 years ago at @UofIllinois to reveal the biochem of photosynthesis and photorespiration, as well as many other amazing speakers relating how their work builds on that foundation to understand and improve plant function

@erikaedw @josejmovi @kheyduk Tweeps: post your global #purslane pics! Tell us the situation (mall parking lot, crevice in cement barrier, side of highway) and geographic location

Purslane! A leggy one, gas station in Massachusetts on way to pick kid up from camp. How many global #purslane sightings could we get in one day on twitter? I’d love to see- @josejmovi any over in London? @kheyduk how about Honolulu ?
Purslane! Growing in a crack on Isola Bella in Lago Maggiore overrun with tourists. Delicious raw. @erikaedw

In New Haven, in August, this is keeping me smiling all the time 😎. I smile also because I am so proud of this team of scientists – the last two years have been hard. I’m so grateful that this is the crew I was lucky enough to get through it with. @josejmovi y’all we did it!

There is so much to discover about the wonders of plants. My favorite thing about this project is that it is *purslane* - the weed in every sidewalk crack, on every continent- we’ve all come across one. And we didn’t understand how special it is. Now I smile every time I see one.

What does this mean for food security? I am not sure, there is a lot of work to do. Many folks are working hard to improve photosynthesis in crops- the idea of a C4 maize that can CAM its way through a drought is really something. Portulaca shows us that maybe there's a way 8-

We predict that there may be more examples of C4+CAM across the plant tree of life- we’ve just never really looked for it. For example, CAM activity was just recently reported in C4 Trianthema: https://t.co/2Fawn4KDNT 7-
