Word from @NotreDame is that the single credit class being offered this semester on Augustine’s Confessions is packed, every seat taken: 455 students. The kids are hungry for the true, the good and the beautiful. Let’s give it to them.

The obvious problem with this retort is that the 19th c women's rights advocates -- writing at the time the 14th amendment was ratified (1868) & when legislatures were enhancing CL protections in light of contemporary advances in embryology -- were all opposed to abortion. /1

If Alito gets a majority for his opinion in current form, the dissents are going to be very powerful. Saying women shouldn’t have rights today b/c it wasn’t custom & history in this country for men to grant them to them may not turn be the compelling argument he thinks it is.

This is untrue. Neither Wollstonecraft nor the early women’s rights advocates denied sex differences. They celebrated women's capacity for motherhood & the duties required of them when they became mothers (i.e., w/ child). They agitated for rights to better carry out their duties

“Bachiochi makes a persuasive case that as long as we uphold women’s right to end a pregnancy, we conclusively favour the Hobbesian vision of selfhood over one that makes room for dependency and care.” An honor to have the brilliant @moveincircles review my book for @unherd .

Highly recommend this book (albeit a year late) to any interested in how a generally Aristotelean framework can offer an ennobling vision of ethics, politics & economics for the human beings we actually are, living in the world we actually inhabit.

More from Woodhull: "Many women who would be shocked at the very thought of killing their children after birth, deliberately destroy them previously. If there is any difference in the actual crime we should be glad to have those who practice the latter, point it out..." /4

You've been treated unjustly. But what you don't see is that 60 yrs of abortion-as-a-privileged-response to reproductive asymmetry relieved US institutions from having to work to accommodate "a body that can become pregnant." The "merciless capitalist system"💗s abortion.

Luckily, I have a choice & can refuse to put up with this BS. Solidarity with the women in the US who don’t have a choice – who have to live in a religious state that takes away their abortion rights & work in a merciless capitalist system that punishes them for being pregnant.

"Once we are on the other side of this fifty year legal battle over Roe, we would all do well to recognize that the answer to injustice against vulnerable people is not abortion — itself an injustice against the vulnerable — but systemic structural change instead." End.

Deeply honored and humbled to receive this year’s Nolan Award from the Boston Catholic Lawyers Guild. Though far more learned than me, Judge Nolan was also a daily communicant whose love of the law and devotion to his big family were an expression of his love of God.

To increase economic growth, the Treasury Secretary tells us we need women to be workers. For women to be workers, they can't be mothers too for then we'd have to change how we think about everything. And that's no good. So don't let Roe go.

Tx for the shout-out, Richard. Sexual asymmetry means both that women are disproportionately burdened by sex's consequences & men are disproportionately burdened by sexual desire. How sex's magnificent consequences should be shared & desires expressed are civilization-shaping Qs.

"Mature masculinity does not require an abandonment of sexual desire. Quite the opposite. That desire is one of the things that is great about being a man. Expressed in the right way, it is a vital and valuable ingredient in most relationships."

We human beings are at our origins familial beings who need, for their mature development, the give and take within families where each is properly responsible for the others. All policy is, then, in one way or another, family policy. My remarks @ISI yesterday.

Nearly 10 yrs after helping to found St Benedict Classical Academy - - we've grown from 23 students to more than 200. The school itself is a great source of hope but so are all the calls we receive from parents around the country looking to replicate!
