Professor @ericamhartmann spoke with the BBC, emphasizing that while toothbrushes and showerheads harbor a rich diversity of bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria—there's no need for heightened concern or excessive cleaning. @cee_nwu https://t.co/G24w4Vm9nl

Bacteria from our toilets, the cold sore virus and thrush-causing yeast can thrive on our toothbrushes. But there are ways to keep your toothbrush a little cleaner.

🚨New Crofts lab paper🚨 Functional metagenomic libraries let us study bacterial genes 🧫🧬 from microbiomes💩, even if they've never been annotated with a function before 📒. However, these libraries often require more metagenomic DNA than is available from some samples.

Science funding represents a tiny fraction of our federal budget but has a massive boost to our economy. The repercussions of cutting this funding are very real, both in terms of lost knowledge and innovation, an in terms of human suffering.

To remain a beacon of progress, the U.S. must support scientists, not silence them. Today, at “The Things We’ll Never Know: A Science Fair of Canceled Grants,” we are learning from scientists about their canceled projects & the impact on American science. #StandUpForScience

Federal funding is being cut in so many ways, having so many awful impacts. We need sustained funding to create new drugs and technologies and train the workforce for these vitally important industries. https://t.co/ILG2hVZTXM

Front page of the Wall Street Journal today 👀 Restore scientific funding, protect American innovation. “The scientists pay for it, and eventually then the U.S. people pay for it, because research isn’t getting done.” https://t.co/eOTGjvIOhZ

The federal government froze the university’s research funding. It hasn’t offered the school a way to get it back.

For the last 8 years, I have used this op-ed in my intro biology class for engineers as an example of both the power of science and the necessity to talk about science. Science matters just as much today as it did 8 years ago.
