The mechanism, termed asynchronous amine-assisted metalation/deprotonation is distinct from the various forms and flavors of CMD that we are accustomed to. In fact, canonical carboxylate bases shut down the reaction! @YilinCao_chem & @cagan_da led the charge on pinning it down!.
