Okay. I take issue with this. Alanna of Trebond wasn't "gender non-conforming" or any of that bullshit. She was a girl who wanted to be a knight and couldn't because women weren't allowed to be knights. She didn't "hate" being female, she hated that she couldn't do what she.
The author, Maia Kobabe, had the same childhood obsession with gender non-conforming characters and historical figures as I did. My heroes growing up were Joan of Arc, Deborah Sampson, and other women who overthrew gender norms to take part in the battles of their time.
