Fun fact, most of the data of the paper have been collected and analyzed remotely during the March 2020 lockdown. We were lucky to have our dilution cryostat running by itself for two full weeks before its trap finally ran out of nitrogen! 8/8.

By enhancing the radiative decay rate of the ensemble and by improving the darkcount of the detector, we can in principle reach single spin sensitivity based on this method, in close analogy with the optical detection of NV centers and other types of crystal defects. 7/8.

Importantly, microwave photon detection evades the quantum limit of detection mentioned earlier as it directly measures within the energy basis of the field. Therefore, its sensitivity is only bounded by the performance of the photon detector. 6/8.

In this work, we ensure the radiative decay of a spin ensemble by coupling it to a high-quality factor and small-mode-volume superconducting resonator. We then connect the device output to a newly-developed SMPD based on a superconducting qubit. 5/8.

These radiations are fundamentally different as it consists of a collection of individual photons with no phase coherence. To collect this signal efficiently, we use a new type of detector, a single microwave photon counter. 4/8.

Another type of signal is also emitted by spins. Upon excitation with a microwave pulse, spins can also relax to their equilibrium state by spontaneously emitting microwave photons, that's the microwave fluorescence of the spin ensemble. 3/8.

The magnetic resonance signal consists of an oscillating magnetic field emitted coherently by a spin ensemble. Even with a quantum-limited measurement chain, the field measurement is fundamentally spurred by zero-point fluctuations, which ultimately limits its sensitivity. 2/8.

A thread on our newly published paper, we demonstrate a new modality for electron spin resonance by directly measuring the microwave fluorescence of a spin ensemble with a single microwave photon detector. 1/8.
