Apparently “dropping new music out of the blue” or something is a thing the kids do nowadays!
So to celebrate going ont rod with Jenn Reid today, have some of that!
Totally solo and mostly unaccompanied. Get it in you! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

My beautiful mam passed away yesterday, January 30th 2022.
More details over on my Facebook page. Very tired today.
“Just a song at twilight”
to support my dad.
😔❤️
Wasn’t up for saying anything yesterday, feeling private, rather than wanting to talk.
Two years yesterday, mam. The world turns, and I’m still grateful you’re not in pain any more and that you pop into my dreams to check in.
We miss and love you. I’m looking after him, promise.
Thanks for these lovely words,
@juderogers

Norma Waterson was one of folk’s greatest voices – and greatest people | Folk music | The Guardian
Happy 80th birthday Daddy. In a few days…it feels right for you of all people to have a much-deserved birth month. I tried to wait & I give up! I love you. Loyal, honourable, genius, hardworking-all the things I want to be. You are what dads/humans/men should be, thankyou.
Just interviewed singer Martin Carthy, who shepherded Bob Dylan around the London folk scene in the early '60s. Nice anecdote: Bob invited him to one of his London Palladium shows last week. They hadn't seen each other for decades. "We just fell into each other's arms."
Not sure if anyone knew here, but for those wondering-Mam is out of surgery and should be home tomorrow. Shiny new heart valve, brighter days ahead. ❤️❤️❤️
HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY! She’s home. Thanks to everyone who shared and helped, and thanks to the Monks Walk pub on Highgate. Please go there and spend your money!!!
This week we lost one of the most remarkable voices in traditional English folk music, Norma Waterson.
Here we remember her on the show in 1996 with 'There Ain't No Sweet Man That's Worth The Salt Of My Tears' 🎶
You can find the full performance here:
IT'S DEFINITELY MY BAG!
Spoke to the lovely Simon at Piccadilly today who described my bits, and said it's all fine in there...
I get it back Thursday after the Folk Awards.Planning summat spesh for you after...

Kind people. Just got back from visiting some very old family friends, and remembering there are kind people that see us.
Love, kindness, family. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I’ve had an email from Manchester Piccadilly to say they think they have my suitcase in lost & found!!! Have to go on Monday to see. In the meantime I have to thank you all for your incredible help in a very dark week for me & my girls. What can I do for you? Post a song?
We were hoping for another day or so to let it sink in, but here we are, these things have their own pace. Love you, my beloved boss and brother. Too soon. ✊🏻❤️🔥💔
I need to add my voice to the growing number of people asking our friends, colleagues and fans to in no way support this racist organisation. Shame. 🔔😡
Happy New Year to everyone, and particularly all my brilliant and supportive followers here, some of whom have become dear mates this year. Health and love to a’bdee

(Even the weasels)
I’m sorry for the lack of posting at the moment, I am spending these days thinking about my dear friend and how much I will miss him, the hole in our community he has left.
Hopefully back to silliness and news soon, but quiet time for now.

Mental few days battling chest infections and high seas, seeing long lost friends and trying to prepare for the biggest tour I’ve had in a fair few years…
Already tired. I know, let’s cook Christmas dinner for ten hundreds of miles from home!
Nervous. Determined. Hug? Anyone?!😂
The UK folk music scene is massive, there are several Christmas folk tours happening this season, including mine with
@boden_jon
and one with regular chart-bothering folksinger
@katerusby
, on her 7th Christmas album.
Hard to dismiss the tens of 000s of audience as “faddists”…
@RichardWLewis
Traditionally songs that depict crime and murder are catharsis, and have a specific purpose which is to act as a warning to the community to not behave that way. It’s not a song that celebrates the murder, and isn’t delivered that way. Murder ballads have a very important role.
Almost £300 to buy two single tickets from Scarborough to London and back today.
Train travel is now not the ethical choice for everyone, but a bona fide luxury.
Return tickets are no longer available, even from booths and ticket machines. It’s no wonder they’re striking.
MASSIVE solidarity to our dear friend Sam Sweeney for taking this difficult and principled decision. All pile on guys, give him a follow and buy ESCAPE THAT if you don’t already own it ✊🏻❤️🔥✊🏻❤️🔥✊🏻❤️🔥✊🏻
Hi,
@TheAntonDuBeke
. As President of The English Folk Dance and Song Society I invite you to witness some wonderful English folk dancing, on a day of your choice. Whitsun is coming up but there are dozens of fantastic Morris teams, hundreds of dancers, out and proud all year.
Fuck

... when someone is passing the bullying on to those weaker than them, they're no better than their bullies.
I'm sick and tired of the excellent dancing tradition from the area I grew up in being the butt of lazy jokes from people who value Saturday night TV

Such an amazing sight, I’ll see it again one day. I do wonder if all those fools banging on about St George’s Day know anything about the real traditions we celebrate, whether or not those in power let us have it as a holiday. May Day forever ✊🏻❤️🔥…unite! ❤️🔥
@squeezyjohn
I’m going to challenge this, simply because the “folk scene” isn’t an organisation, isn’t an institution. Promoters are not authority figures, we enter into individual contracts with them, we’re an ecosystem and we can democratically purge as we find as we have done this weekend.
I’ve stood up for the English my entire adult life.I’ve always believed in an inherent generosity, community mindedness & love for one another & neighbours; I truly hope I’m not proved wrong tonight & we’re not witnessing the isolation & breakup of our family. Sleep Easy. Love ❤️
One of the less generous comments on the BBC’s clip of our Biggest Weekend appearance said “Who let someone’s mum onstage?”
1. “Let?” Try and stop me. Just fucking try.
2. My mum couldn’t be onstage last night, and we were all the poorer for it. Mums RUN THE WORLD 😂❤️❤️

Very sorry to hear that Norma Waterson, the last of the singing Watersons from Hull, has passed away. She started out as a skiffler and went on to become one of the defining voices of English traditional music. My thoughts are with Martin and Eliza and the rest of the family.
One of this country's most loved and respected folk performers, Martin Carthy, plays an online gig for the wonderful folks at
#LiveToYourLivingRoom
this coming Saturday 16th at 8pm. Be sure to get your tickets at .
Been carol singing down the Dock with all the village today. That was bloody lovely. Here’s a whole face in front of our kissing bough which is the first thing to go up at Christmas! Because I’m cheerful. Merry thing. Xe
Dad has a great story about a bloke telling him that any character riding a “milk white steed” is going to be an arsehole. Look at the horse, not the guy! Look at the horse!!! Classic diversion tactic. 🤣
@elizacarthy
For example, Lovely Joan. Fine young man sees lovely Joan and plans to have his wicked way. She outsmarts him and rides away with his horse and ring. This is a great insight into people's values I think.. probably at odds with the values of the aristocracy...
@kathryn_sean
have made the incredibly brave decision to cancel their gig in Oxford tonight, at considerable cost to themselves.
Please visit their page, give them a follow and get to the website and buy their albums! Let’s see how many follows/sales we can support them with. ✊🏻
Last one to leave the year, make sure to turn the lights out & LOCK THE DOOR BEHIND YOU. There’s petrol in the shed. Fill watering can with it, pour through letterbox, stand well back when you stick the burning paper through there too.
Happy New Everything, friends.

No, economic stagnation in the Arts is not down to Covid. Since well before 2016 the catastrophic effect of Brexit on my industry has been real. Stop gaslighting the Arts.
@Keir_Starmer
The news just followed people in Yorkshire saying they voted Tory for the first time because they didn’t like Corbyn with a report about how A&E waiting times are the worst in Yorkshire since the 80s. You really couldn’t make it up. Dark days, friends. Look after eachother. <3
No one who has ever had the terrifying experience of being spiked and waking up in hospital can trust
@JamesCleverly
now. Disgusting. I still have the scar.
@elizacarthy
Sadly, there are plenty of people jumping to Cleverly's defence. How anyone could think rape or spiking make acceptable subjects for humour escapes me.
Politics. Literally about people. Everyone gets a say-there is no unknowable class that gets to decide for us what’s good for us, it’s everyone’s business. Including musicians, street sweepers, glass blowers, doctors, the unemployed-we fought for the right to have an opinion.
I am completely obsessed with the Martin Carthy/Norma Waterson family fund drive. Their music shaped my life & art.
Last night at 9,990 donations; now up to 10,950. People care! And thanks to
@elizacarthy
for giving us all the chance to say so. Keep 'em coming!
Do you know what it isn't any more? It isn't that day. It's not Friday 13th, it's not the day after that thing. Let's rejoice...let's all pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, don binbags and PARTY LIKE WE'LL MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE IN THE END <3
Absolutely heartbroken to see this go quietly through while everyone has had their eyes across the sea.
The consequences of this, the shortsightedness of it, for my industry during a time of real hardship-
Sorry, I’m normally more able to write coherently than this.
Bastards.
After many years of campaigning, I am delighted the Immigration Bill which will end free movement on 31st December has today passed through Parliament.

Martin Carthy MBE’s irreplaceable Martin guitar has gone missing after a gig in Beverley tonight. It’s a Martin 000-18 MC signature edition in a soft black case, may have been found in the road. Please if found get in touch! We don’t yet suspect theft. Please RT ❤️
This is absolutely outrageous. No one should be hounded out of their home for playing an instrument.

This time last year I had a blue tick that meant I was who I said I was ... now a blue tick is almost certainly an identifier of a political propagandist/bot ... I stayed here because it's a useful outlet to a significant following ... if X becomes paid for that goes too.

Watching “Renegade Nell” on Disney+, and I couldn’t be more angry about the music. I’m just sick of the lack of imagination and almost wilful need to bypass traditional English music in OSTs.

Hahahahahaha! Of course they were, you massive one-argument pony and trapbag. Seriously, do you have any other opinions than the PC brigade shtick? Do everyone a favour and grow another idea, humongous idiotic twat.
@Glinner
I stand with Billy. Women’s rights and transwomen’s rights are human rights. Placing them in opposition to eachother endangers vulnerable trans boys, too. Billy is right, it’s male aggression that is the problem. So we should get together to deal with that.
@juderogers
@elizacarthy
A lovely piece of writing. Apart from the singing, my favourite NW moment is sitting near her and Martin at an Eliza Carthy concert in Whitby. EC: "This is a song I learned from my mum... who's here." NW (shouts): "You're doing it wrong."
