On our World of Migration podcast, Vincent @cochetel makes the case that to safeguard the strained global refugee protection system, protections should be ended for people no longer at risk

Wondering if any German colleagues have seen anything about this in German sources? It's not something that's come across my radar nor have I had any luck searching for more info.

US to start sending deported migrants to Rwanda. Very much not the first time this has been tried. Rwanda has a long history of this sort of agreement with high-income countries, beginning with Israel in 2013.

The Times is also reporting that applicants for the pathway will be prioritized based on family ties and nationality (i.e. high grant rate nationalities would be prioritized). Link below.

The European Commission initially indicated it was skeptical of the UK-France agreement, back in July. But they seem to have come around, with Brunner now saying he "welcomes" the arrangement.

Today, the pilot agreement between France and the UK on the prevention of dangerous journeys enters into force. The rising number of migrants smuggled across the English Channel is worrying. The unscrupulous business model of smugglers must be broken. I therefore welcome

The announcement also mentions that the France to UK pathway will operate with an online "Expression of Interest" system, where applicants can submit their details to be reviewed for eligibility by the Home Office.

Worth noting that this article suggests that they are looking at moving people who have a pending US asylum claim. Unclear how they would handle processing in Liberia or another third country. Who would be responsible? Where would people receive residency if asylum was granted?

Numbers will initially be small for this 'one in one out' Channel crossings deal, but it's the best chance we have right now for tackling the small boats issue.

Big news from the UK-France summit. Starmer announces a pilot 1:1 returns deal. For each person returned to France, one person will be admitted to the UK. A good first step towards addressing mixed migration in a way that shares, rather than transfers responsibility.
