It will be VERY interesting to see whether the Ukraine emergency has any impact on the passage of the UK's dreadful new Borders Bill, which seeks to eliminate the right to claim asylum in the country & which has been roundly condemned by UNHCR:
I'm blocking anyone who objects to this tweet because I can't deal with people who have no sense of humour.
And anyway, the Paddington films are a progressive project, as explained here:
@ColinYeo1
"I have white skin, I was born in a rich country, I have the right passport, I was allowed to attend three universities, and I graduated at the age of 23. I feel a moral obligation to help those people who did have the foundations that I did."
Someone should write an article explaining exactly why conditions for refugees in Lesvos have not improved in five years, despite all the money that been made available for this situation. Below: photos from January 2017 and 2021. Spot the difference!
What I see in Oxford.
Elite students from developing countries (often with 2 or more passports) walking straight into unpaid and short-term UN summer internships (expenses paid by mum and dad) which will put them on track for proper UN jobs. Upper class reproduction.
1. UK military intervenes in Afghanistan
2. UK military abandons Afghanistan
3. Taliban take over
4. Taliban persecutes Afghans who worked for UK military
5. Those Afghans flee to UK
6. UK deports them to Rwanda
Can people please think twice before making all those 'unprecedented', 'unparallelled', 'record-breaking' & 'largest ever' comments on the Ukraine refugee emergency.
Such comments are (a) inaccurate, and (b) based on a very Eurocentric view of the world.
Thank you.
Let's be clear.
The people the UK is planning to deport to Rwanda are NOT "unsuccessful asylum seekers" or "illegal immigrants."
They come from countries like Afghanistan, Eritrea & Syria, & if they were allowed to claim asylum, would in most cases be granted it.
One comment I have received:
"I absolutely hated my Unicef backpack because of the huge logo.
Everyone knew only the refugee kids wear it. It was like a mark."

This tweet from yesterday was intended to be a joke.
But UK asylum policy has become so outlandish that a large number of people have taken it seriously.
Q. What kind of people would deliberately vote against refugee children who are alone and living in dreadful conditions from being reunited with family members who are already settled in the UK?
A.
Refugees are not migrants. Migrants are not refugees. All have rights that must be respected, but we should not conflate the two.
Refugees have the right to seek asylum and to international protection from persecution and violence.

: a small country with a big heart! Thank you to the government and the people of this great nation for stepping up at an hour of global need. You have provided food, hope and a voice for so many.
Even patients in poor conditions are forced to walk as they are being forcibly displaced from north to south

If you were captured at sea, forced back to Libya at gunpoint and then thrown into an abusive prison for an indefinite period of time, would you use the word 'disembarked' to describe your experience?
Your regular reminder that the 1951 Refugee Convention was not foisted on governments by Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch. It was established by states that saw the need for refugee issues to be addressed in a consistent, predictable and principled manner.
Oscar-winning actor and UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie looks back on her two decades working with us to support refugees and all those forced to flee.
"At Davos, the NYT reported that among the summit’s attractions was “a simulation of a refugee’s experience, where attendees crawl on their hands & knees & pretend to flee from advancing armies”. The article sad “It is one of the most popular events.”
An inevitable consequence of the Ukraine crisis will be to divert attention and resources from other emergencies.
Very bad news for Afghans, Eritreans, Rohingya, Somalis, Yemenis, etc. etc.
For those of us interested in refugees & migrants.
Always worth remembering what a small proportion of the world's population they are, as shown in this pie-chart by Hein de Haas:
Afghanistan will test the core principles of the international refugee regime:
- the right to leave one's own country & seek asylum elsewhere
- the principle that refugees shouldn't be returned to placed where they would be at risk
- the notion of equitable responsibility-sharing
The Universal Declaration on Human Rights contains 30 Articles. Almost every single one of them has been violated in the case of refugees and migrants detained in Libya:
The women of
#Tigray
want to return to the simple normality that we all take for granted - to access basic necessities of life, ensure the safety of their children and their family, and leave their homes without fear of rape. This should not be too much to ask.
#TigrayCantWait
A plausible scenario under UK refugee policy.
- an Eritrean boy, 17, refuses military conscription
- he is arrested & tortured but manages to escape
- his family pay smugglers to take him to France
- now 18, he crosses the Channel by boat
- he is detained & deported to Rwanda
"Germany's most-populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia will take in up to 1,000 of the migrants displaced after a fire tore through a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos."
For the 2nd time in Olympic history, the
#RefugeeOlympicTeam
competes together, made up of members from 11 countries including Syria & Afghanistan. The 29 professional athletes represent hope and solidarity for the 82 million displaced refugees worldwide

Anyone else getting a bit tired of advocacy messages based on the notion that "refugees are natural entrepreneurs and will do great things for your economy"? How about "people whose lives and liberty are at risk can be protected by granting them asylum."
Lots of attention being given to Ukrainian refugee numbers at the moment.
But let's not forget that 86% of refugees are in developing countries which have much lower capacity to respond than those of Central Europe. e.g. a million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar in Bangladesh.
Just announced. UNHCR's Global Academic Network is to be hosted by the University of Essex in the UK.
A reminder: 85% of the world's refugee are hosted in the Global South, but 85% of the world's knowledge about refugees comes from the Global North.
"A judge in Rome has indicted two high-ranking Italian officials for their alleged role in the deaths of hundreds of refugees who tried to reach Italy by boat."
No country's record on refugees is perfect. Far from it. But on the eve of the Global Refugee Forum, let's give some recognition to the efforts of countries such as Canada, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Germany, Jordan, etc.
Any other candidates for the 'good guys' list?
Britain's new refugee definition.
"A person who can demonstrate a well-founded fear of imminent execution in their country of origin, who has a plane ticket and visa for the UK, and who can prove that s/he will not resort to public funding after arriving in the country."
BBC TV latest.
Former UK Border Force chief says that "If we want to stop asylum in the UK, we have to make the country less attractive."
So that's the aim. "To stop asylum in the UK."
"Italy will give 600,000 illegal migrants the right to stay in the country after the government said they proved essential by caring for the elderly and picking crops during the coronavirus crisis."
Sorry to be a bore, but here goes.
There will be officials in Brussels, London, Paris, Rome etc., who are eating nice meals with their families tonight, but who are implementing policies designed to ensure that refugees are denied the same opportunity. Enjoy!
@MarkLGoldberg
I don't think he would have gone this far with a UN Member State. And now some doubts are being raised as to whether the fuel in question did actually belong to WFP.
1. The UK government announces a policy of 'Global Britain'
2. It says it wants to attract the 'brightest & best' to the country
3. It offers scholarships to some highly qualified Afghans
4. It then refuses them visas because they might want to stay in the country
What shit!
The UK's hapless 'Minister for Immigration Compliance' just claimed that its asylum policy has been developed in close cooperation with UNHCR. Which is an outright lie. To its credit, UNHCR has been HIGHLY critical of the UK legislation.
Danish MP and former Minister of Immigration Inger Støjberg posted a message on Facebook addressing Syrian refugees in Denmark and calling them to return to Syria. “Denmark is not your home” she said.
Let's hope that a result of the Ukraine invasion will be a renewed appreciation that refugee status is intended to protect the life & liberty of people who would be at risk if they remained in or returned to their own country.
That's why it was established in 1951.
