Today The Texas Tribune laid off its copy desk. I can’t pretend I’m not heartbroken, but I’m so proud of the work our team has done. In the less than two years we’ve been keeping track, the copy desk has saved the Trib from publishing more than 600 errors.

Young journalists are rightfully asking about burnout and the sustainability of this career path. I experienced trauma early in my career and have chronic mental health concerns. I haven't always had clear goals; most of the time, I was just trying to get from day to day. 1/

When I was an intern, an experienced reporter took my story and rewrote it with his byline. When I was 21 and starting my first journalism job, my boss berated me for every mistake I made. I am good at my job, but I didn’t always believe that. Please be kind to young journalists.

#Journalism friends: What are some terms that you didn't understand as an intern or young journalist that you were too embarrassed to ask about because you thought everyone else knew? I want to create a glossary. Hint: Pool reporters/photographers are not as fun as they sound.

All this is to say: Do what you need to do for you. It's OK to get out of journalism. It's OK to get back into journalism. It's OK to take a break, to rethink your goals, to take more time to get to where you want to go. There isn't a right way or a wrong way to do this. 4/

First, your cover letter should answer two main questions: Why do you want to work with us, and why do we want to work with you? It’s OK to expand on highlights from your resume, but don’t just rehash it. Why are you passionate about journalism? Why is this role right for you? 2/

I’ve been in survival mode for months. Most weeks I feel like I can barely get through work, and I sleep all weekend. I cry every Sunday night because I have to start it all over. I’m seeing a therapist and a psychiatrist, but I could use some help getting out of this cycle.

As a copy editor, part of my job is to tell people when they’ve made a mistake. My goal is never to have them dwell on it. It is human to make mistakes, in work and in life, and I believe in learning and moving forward. So why is it so hard to extend such compassion to myself?
