Huge thanks to my co-authors @fishycarb, Kath Sloman, and Chris Cooper and the rest of the Wilson lab group who helped with the sampling @H_R_Goodrich @DanWMont @lumpyjenny

I'm super proud of this paper and think it's a great tool for the world of #fishphysiology and a step forward for #animalwelfare. If you have any questions hit me up

Experiment 3: We used our novel method on fish as small as 18 g. This showed a key advantage over cannulation which typically requires fish 10 times this size! This opens up a new avenue for determining acid-base chemistry of small/juvenile fish!

Experiment 2: We took blood samples from cannulated fish and then immediately used our new method to sample the same fish across three different water chemistries. The samples had almost identical acid-base chemistry showing our method is just as good as cannulation!

Experiment 1: We compared our method to two different variations of grab 'n' stab sampling. We found our method avoided the acute stress responses seen in the grab 'n' stab samples.

We take a "best-of-both-worlds" approach that avoids the acute stress associated with grab 'n' stab sampling while also avoiding the difficulties associated with cannulating fish.

Ever wondered if it’s costly for fish to digest the shell and bone in their prey? Same! We show that🦴and🐚can decrease stomach acidity, increase the alkaline tide and cost more to digest. But a📈SDA didn’t = 📉growth. Open access in @SciReports here:

My favourite part of this article was the PI who complained that there aren't any postdocs and then didn't hire any of the 36 applicants who applied for her post... https://t.co/xlby1oRvai
