New article out in New Political Economy: “Performing Energy: The IEA and the Conflicting Imaginaries of Capitalist Energy Transition” 🔗 https://t.co/gvoKycIeUX It explores how the @IEA doesn’t just model the future—it actively tries to shape it. A few key points: 🧵

The conflict over the International Energy Agency's projections reflects a conflict over capital allotment today. The organization is at the center of a brawl over who gets to perform the future of energy, and for what interests.

The same people who used to praise the IEA now criticises it. The same who attacked it say all is now good. And then there's the shoot-the-messenger camp. Because the green intelligentsia loves a free press until it reports what it doesn't like. Maybe they learnt from OPEC.

US fracking and UK North Sea oil were what @ewangibbs and I call late-imperial booms: national fossil fuel projects imagined as restoring energy security and geopolitical power amid imperial decline. Our paper compares their convergences & limits.

*New research article* @EckhouseGabe and I for Geoforum on how since the 1970s North Sea oil and then fracking have been imagined as British and American national energy sources through imperial oil booms reinforcing old oil powers. Read it here⬇️ https://t.co/79maaDqqv7

Same for natural gas. New @IEA quarterly report: "natural gas demand growth is forecast to accelerate in 2026, sending total demand to a new all-time high." Peak by 2030, as IEA previously projected, seems highly unlikely.
BREAKING: In its semi-annual report, @IEA revises higher its estimate of global consumption in 2024 to a record high of ~8.79 billion metric tons (from ~8.77 billion previously). IEA also anticipates a new demand all-time high in 2025, before dropping in 2026 | #CoalTwitter

Any delay in the development of the Jafurah liquid-rich shale gas play is important because: 1) it's slated to add >600,000 b/d of liquids (condensates / NGLs rather than crude) by 2030 2) its gas supply is key to displace crude in KSA electricity generation, cutting oil demand
Oil services giants $SLB and $HAL both singling out a slowdown in activity in Saudi Arabia (linked in part to delays in the development of the the large Jafurah unconventional gas field) #OOTT #SaudiArabia

In 2000, China accounted for 6% of global manufacturing. In 2030, China is projected to account for 45% of global manufacturing. This kind of shift is unprecedented in the modern world economy.
