I know this is likely to be a primitive take on the energy crisis we are facing. But more data definitely doesn't mean less energy. More electric cars doesn't mean less energy. More iPhones don't mean less energy. It's a broken and false narrative.

Trying to meet this half way, which is the current ambition, is a poisoned well. The more end user products require charging, the deeper you have to dig to offer that remote power source.

Actual long term bi-partisan collective agreements and commitments that reach beyond the demands of executive shareholders, old money, and VCs and consider the long term future of the species and the planet.

There is no truly green energy. Only extraction. AI cannot fix this. Tesla Cybertrucks cannot fix this.

It has and always will be so obvious. You can't just replace one energetic technological paradigm with another and call it green. You can't create AI factories and call it green.

The NYT article is super important but I also feel really annoyed about how 10 years after I started this kind of research, I have seen so many colleagues write about data centers and lack of green infrastructure to support it

Personally I'm really looking forward to the first Thom Yorke AI voice generated album. I'm hoping it's metal.

My latest for @Nature: AI's environmental costs are soaring. The new energy-hungry models for video, text, and image could create an energy crisis - and impact drinking water reserves. We urgently need action from industry, researchers, and legislators. https://t.co/1zT0mMaP4f

Call to sound studies and ethnomusicologists. Are Singing Bowls several thousand years old traditional instruments or food bowls that Americans picked up in the 70s whilst backpacking and took home?

Today Oxford Brookes announced the closure of its Maths & Music departments, & that many colleagues in others are at risk of redundancies in a ridiculously short timeframe & insulting VS scheme: in English, History, Film, Anthropology, and more to come. All doing great research.
