#MedTwitter - YOU DID IT! #eltonformaha and the amazing @Willow_Fdn got this @PMPSurvivor to the Rocket Man! Dream come true. Can’t believe it happened after nearly 3 awful years thinking it wouldn’t. I never knew me a better time and I guess I never will 🚀 ♥️ 🎹 @eltonofficial

Once upon a time, on elective @nyuniversity @lenoxhill we started lists by 6.30am. Minor GAs recovered home by afternoon. Resident operative skills - a thing of beauty. Amazing teamwork. Happy patients. Well-oiled machine. Didn’t make headlines as it was routine 🤷🏻♀️ #justsaying
22 years as a NHS Consultant Rhinologist I’ve never operated upon someone’s sinuses under GA, recovered then and discharged them so they are home by 10am. #amazing

#BowelCancerAwarenessmonth I don’t know what to say. My only symptom: extreme tiredness, but I was pregnant, full time surgical trainee, mothering a toddler. Any signs/alarm bells, please consider malignancy #NeverTooYoung

Tweeting from a @BasingstokePmi hospital bed yet again. Please give my sob story some tea and sympathy, and get #eltonformaha some RETWEETS for @eltonofficial @Willow_Fdn @PMGUK1 #medtwitter ! You know I never ask for anything so just once, a little Rocketman, that’s all 🎹 🚀 👓
Let’s help @earsandskiing with her bucket list! She’d love to see @eltonofficial in concert. @BasingstokePmi could you refer to @Willow_Fdn for help perhaps? #eltonformaha

So much wisdom on twittersphere today. Whilst I waited my turn to rejoin, it came not in the shape I hoped. On #IWD2022 again I face my own mortality, and lament when I was the one doing the operating. So privileged to do what we do. Back to Basingstoke! #theothersideoftheknife

I simply haven’t the words. When such a skilled, kind and inspiring colleague does not feel safe in their place of work, we each have a responsibility to ask ourselves what we are doing to protect ourselves and colleagues in the face of ignorant and racist behaviour.
Sunday 10th October 2021. It’s 15:40. I’m waiting for a lift to go home after a busy clinic and a woman sat near me comments loudly that she doesn’t know why these Muslim women cover their heads - how are you meant to tell them all apart? They look ridiculous.

Monday reflection: H&N cancer patient smoking/drinking after Tx. Reprimand? Educate? Acknowledge the difficult journey? I’ve terrible mucositis from chemo RN. Small pleasures may be what keeps them going. For me, choc buttons. For some, certain vices may be what gets them through

4/4 I’ve been lucky to have had good relationships with my patients, but now, if I couldn’t establish this I’d consider discussing with a colleague. I am forever grateful to the amazing @BasingstokePmi team who gave me a miracle, and a chance to live.

3/4 The trust I had in him gave me strength to recover and rebuild my life (though further chemo has wiped me out but more on that later!). It made me realise the power of a good doctor-patient relationship.

2/4 Developed sepsis, felt I was weeks from death. But I found a surgeon whom I immediately had a great rapport with. We were on the same proverbial page and had mutual understanding. I trusted him, and he me. I underwent surgery accepting of the risks. He may have saved my life.

1/4 I’ve been quiet. Much has happened. Saturday reflection: would you refer a patient you couldn’t establish rapport/trust with to a colleague (with permission)? A yr ago I was on chemo which ultimately failed. Wasn’t eligible for trials. Tumour inoperable. (cont’d in comments)

Biggest professional regret: believing people saying this for too long instead of believing in me. Don’t make this mistake. You do you! (TBH still pinch myself when I realise I am somebody’s mother. But funnily, never consciously remember that I’m a surgeon 🤷🏻♀️ Identity thing 🤷🏻♀️)

Takes two minutes...no time at all considering you have up to four days off!
Palliative care in H&N is so important, yet as ENT surgeons we dread having to manage such complex patients. Please can my Registrar/ Middle Grade and Consultant colleagues please complete this short survey that @palliativemeddr has put together & share

Last time I travelled by train was representing @UKWENTs @ENT_UK at @WomenSurgeonsUK conference ‘19. Now off to @uclh @uclcancer with shoe on the patient foot. Many things’ve changed. Is it silly that train travel makes me feel like myself again? Cancer can make you lose yourself

Autumn term @TheChristie began with bad news. Beautifully delivered. No framework. Brevity, honesty, empathy. #juniordoctors use your tools, observe bad news delivery, reflect on your consultation style, know your patient-find what works for you. Not one-size-fits-all #MedTwitter
