Oh, why that is the exact same reason I'm not keen to visit the US - I like going to college campuses, movie theatres, shopping malls and concerts without getting gunned down by some random nutter with a semi-automatic gun.
Looking like a good start to the month again. Always hard to believe that what we used to make in a whole year, we now make in a single day.
Perseverance pays off!

I believe that was just stock art created by Australian artist Yiying Lu called "lifting the dreamer". They must have liked the birds which looked similar to the logo and bought a licence to use it from her.

I don't think you will have to worry about Chrissy's child. You'd have your hands full counselling hundreds of thousands of other kids who are too afraid to go to class in case there is another mass shooting in school, or who have learned hate, bigotry & intolerance from

Today marks one year that I have been getting a steady salary from my
#SaaS
startup (including a raise halfway through last year). After ~4 years of living on savings, that is an incredible feeling to be paying *all* bills from something I built!
@MercedesAMGF1
Considering that Angela is such a large part of Lewis' success, I think she should be invited to the podium one day to receive the constructors prize when handed out.
#AngelaMcForThirdTeamDriver
That feeling when a customer subscribed to your SaaS actually pays you a 4 figure lump sum $$$ to move a feature up in your roadmap priority schedule! 😮

Good luck! You interviewed my wife once many years ago for a support role at Basecamp. She turned down the job, but said it was one of the best interview processes she went through and she liked dealing with you. You will find success.
I sold my old software business and started my current (and most successful) startup when I turned 50.
Mainly because I knew trying to find another coding job at 50 would be impossible, so I just had to build myself a job that I loved, in order to see out my working life! 😅

It's also important to remember during these night investigations - if you hear a noise right behind you, then you must freeze in place for at least 30 seconds and stare into space directly 180 degrees away from the source rather than spin around immediately to confront it...
@yassmin_a
Hope everything is all resolved calmly and safely. This was always in the back of my mind on my recent trip to the US. Thankfully I just had the usual jaded, grumpy, rude immigration treatment before they let me in.
@Emmalouisajones
LOL - I live in the Northern Territory and since the pandemic hit the world, we have had 7 total days of lockdown, and ZERO deaths here to date. We live a life of complete freedom at the moment. Sort out your own back yard before you judge us...
A negative customer interaction on Friday left me feeling down, but then I woke up to this flood of Stripe notifications in my Inbox this morning and felt grateful for how far we've come... I remember only getting one or two of these per month in the early days!
@EmmaBostian
I've been a coder for >4 decades. Written an enterprise HR system with $50K+ LOC and 250+ data tables, no problem. Today sat down to code up a new website using a new CSS framework and managed ONE static page all day, with plenty of swearing. We are ALL noobs at some point. 😅

It took us almost exactly one year to get our first paying customer! In two years, we had 10. Now we are doing comfortable 7 figures ARR, have a great team, thousands of customers, and have mid 6 figures in the bank - all completely bootstrapped. Perseverance pays off.
Hotter Take: The easiest way to burn yourself out is to assume you have to be "successful" before you are 30.
Enjoy travelling and doing things while you still can - you have decades to do something significant.
(says the guy who changed careers and built a new startup at 50).

Similar here. Sat at an Indian chap's desk to fix his PC once when I was an on-call tech, and a white lady came up and started talking work stuff. I said "Rahul's gone to get coffee. I'm not him" and she just glared at me and said "Well, you all look the same" and stormed off.
@patio11
In over 30 years of software development, I've coded stuff in over 20+ languages. I am constantly Googling 'loop' syntaxes even if I wrote a loop in that same language just a week ago.
3 yrs ago, I remember contacting various vendors asking them to integrate with my app and getting brushed off. This month, 4 vendors (including one with a $100mm valuation) contacted me *unasked* to say they are building integrations with my HR SaaS and want to talk marketing. 🍾

@shl
No. Never. In over 40 years of building software, every single app I built to work exclusively 'on top of' something else died a quick death when (1) The vendor included the functionality in their core app (2) they changed their API markedly, or (3) they pivoted.

Because TCP is a closed spec that is owned and controlled by a private company that can change it or close it down at any time?? Thanks for trying.
Customer: We absolutely need you to build feature 'x'
Me: Is it important to you then?
Cust.: Yes, absolutely critical for us
Me: Ok, It will cost you an extra $50/mo to cover our costs for 3rd party services.
Cust.: What? NO, not paying that!!!
Me: So, NOT that important then...

In 35+ years of coding - Every single time I built an add on with another vendor as the underlying platform, it was killed by the vendor either changing their offering or going out of business. Every. Single. Time.
Integrations are fine, but build something standalone.

As a multiple startup founder, I still live by my middle school maths teacher's advice that axis labelling matters. The y axis here is labelled for context, but the x axis is meaningless - is it 0 to 1 million? $5 to $10? Profit? Gross Revenue? Number of penguins in the office?

Invoking the "45 defense" strategy, I am sure you meant to type "speedo guy" or "pedant guy" depending on his choice of swimwear and/or fussiness...

I don't get this sentiment. Actors and musicians are members of society just doing their job too. Would you tell a plumber to just plumb, or a teacher to just teach and not voice their opinion on politics? Curious as to which professions you think are allowed to do so?
Ouch, that hurt! Just made a 5 figure payment to the tax office. But as another business person once told me - "A tax bill is good, it means you are *making* money!" 🤷♂️

I wrote the first lines of my SaaS startup on a 7 year old laptop while sitting on a kitchen chair. Now, my SaaS has bought me my dream workspace, with my new Mac Studio Ultra, dual 5K Studio Displays, sit/stand desk and Herman Miller chair...
#starupgoals
Years ago, one of my earliest mentors told me:
"A good manager is someone who gives his team all that they need to do their jobs well, and then gets the hell out of the way so that they can do their jobs well..."
I try and live that mantra every day in my startup.
#founderlife
@KishanBagaria
This is why we stopped doing 'Beta' releases altogether with our app - people would sign on for it just wanting early access to it and expecting things to work like production ready and getting angry when it didn't. No useful feedback to enable us to fix things either!
April was the best month for our startup in terms of new signups, but 2/3rds of the way through this month, we have already surpassed last month... All that hard work to build the momentum is paying off. I am grateful to my co-founder and my team for all they do!
#startuplife
7 years ago I thought I should learn CoffeeScript. I didn’t.
4 years ago I thought I should learn TypeScript. I didn’t.
My SaaS app contains thousands of lines of plain JavaScript, and yes, even some *shudder* jQuery, and it is still making us over 7 figures a year.
There is a bird outside my office window, whose two tone chirp is EXACTLY the same as the
@Intercom
chat alert blip, and it is causing me untold stress every few minutes thinking a customer is trying to contact me!!
@TrungTPhan
Definitely the best torch lighting method I've ever seen. Remember watching it live, and then a couple of years ago driving past the stadium in Barcelona and seeing the cauldron and remembering how epic it was all over again.
Well, yes, I was getting jealous of all these other startup founders adding confetti to their apps, so I added some to our HR SaaS to reward our customer's employees when they complete their assigned Goals... 😅
Any freelance graphic designers out there with some spare capacity? We need someone to help our startup with designing marketing, web and ad assets. Only a couple of hours per week for now but possibly increasing later.
Yesterday our new developer quietly fixed some really shitty code decisions that I made years ago when I wrote V1 of our SaaS app. Sometimes it is good to eat humble pie and celebrate the fact that you hire great people specifically to do this... 😌
@paulg
It is a difficult problem to fix if both parents have to work multiple jobs or long hours to put a roof over the family and food on the table. My wife and I deliberately switched to working from home all the time when our kids were born purely so we could be there 1:1 always.
Long weekend Sunday afternoons are for getting a glass of iced Matcha latte and reading
@robwalling
's new book.
It turns out you CAN actually teach an old SaaS dog new tricks!
1 year to get our first customer
2 years to get to 10
5 years to get to 1500
This month, we've signed up more new customers than our first 3 years! Black Friday sales really work, and we have a rush on our last day, it seems...
I know everyone just likes to pile on Apple, but can I just say, as a full card carrying member of the ecosystem, that I just LOVE how "Do Not Disturb" rolls on and off ALL of my devices so seamlessly every day? Definitely a 'quality of life' thing going on there...

My experience with Web3 so far: "We are going to nickel and dime you, and gnaw away at your crypto holdings with fees and charges for *every* *single* *thing* you try to do (and we won't pre-warn you about costs before either because, well, the price is arbitrary)" 🤷♂️💸
As a startup, MRR/ARR etc. are great, but one of the greatest feelings of accomplishment for me this month was seeing our first Customer Success hire 4 years ago grow into a fantastic Product Manager with us now.
It's quite wonderful to see someone's career progress like this!
@myfriendjanine
Took us 1 year to get our first paying customer. Grew to 10 users a year later. Now, 5 years later we have 1500+ users who shelled out $$$ for a subscription. But I still remember (and keep in close contact) with those first few who believed!
@pitchblacksteed
Whenever my wife asks me to do her a favour, it is always ended with "... only if you have the time and you are NOT TOO BUSY!!..." (in Queenie's exact cadence...)
On this day, 6 years ago, I wrote the very first lines of code for what would be the most successful
#SaaS
business I have run in my entire career. This has now grown to:
* 4035 commits to the codebase
* 31363 lines of Ruby
* 47746 lines of HAML
* 39501 lines of CSS

At our startup, we don't even care what incumbent competitors in our space are doing. We purely build features based on our customer's feedback. We are proud of our feature release rate, but we recognise that it isn't a measure of how much "better" we are than 'X' [2 of 2]
@ScottPresler
He would get Jared to save them, then blame HRC for throwing them in, BHO for not vaccinating them, and award himself a Purple Heart... 🙄
I still remember the early days of knocking on the doors of many vendors asking them to build integration pipelines with my
#SaaS
and not getting anywhere.
That is why it is so good today to see great companies like
@merge_api
doing it without having to be asked any more...

Wasn't it revealed in a later book that it was the spirit of Agrajag being called into the universe from the nether regions where he wanted to stay, before being subsequently killed *again* by Arthur Dent pressing the button??
One important thing I have learned while building a startup:
People can impress you by being 'book smart' when it comes to marketing, design and programming...
But the people who get results are the ones who are 'street smart' and have proven real world experience in the above.
