This paper identifies clear patterns in the responses of the bereaved. the formation of delusional narratives that place them at the centre of blame for the death. These narratives impact well-being, increase the risk of mental illness and elevate suicidality.
Have you had the experience of a patient perpetrated homicide? ....If so we have developed a new webpage at the RCPsych to help support you and provide resources that might help in what can be a very distressing time.
After hearing many stories of deaths by suicide and of clinicians’ emotional responses to them, patterns or ‘truths’ started to appear. We became aware that what we were discovering about suicide did not correspond with what we were being told in the wider social environment.
Over three years we have gathered together the leading contemporary clinicians in applied psychodynamic and psychoanalytic work. Anthony Bateman on Mentalizing, Gwen Adshead- Homicide, Margot Waddell-Child Psychotherapy, Joanne Stubley-Complex PTSD, Sue Mizen-Neuropsychoanalysis

@TheBJPsych
Thanks Laura- if we can challenge the delusional beliefs that have permeated our systems, and recognise them for what they are, I think it will really help.
@LizPeecock
Hi Liz, some thinking is that when the decision is made there is a period of calm and what is called a decathexis of relationships (a withdrawal of energy from them)

There is a great quote in the Henry Marsh book ‘Do No Harm’ from the French physician René Leriche, "Every surgeon carries within himself a small cemetery, where from time to time he goes to pray.’
@HenryTTA1
Hi Henry, he is certainly in my mind. He set me on the path to training in psychotherapy. So I am grateful to him for that- and to you. You were very kind to me then. X
