The most important thing about this amazing Paris transformation is how fast it happened — how fast people on bikes “appeared” — once streets were transformed. You can’t write this off as “Paris was always this way,” because it wasn’t. It took leadership.

I know our elites want to talk about everything except this, but as a historian it is my duty to tell you that in such conditions you simply cannot keep a democracy alive. It requires ever more propaganda, authoritarianism, and violence. It is is not sustainable. It is dangerous.
