I've been MIA from Twitter for awhile mainly because I don't like the new X format but as an update, my two-year-old now calls me Dada because he loves the Jimmy Fallon book, "Your baby's first word will be DADA" and husband goes by papa so someone has to be Dada, right?

In speech-language pathology, the term resonance refers to how nasal a person’s speech sounds. For example, when someone is congested they likely sound hyponasal (nasal enough). This is due to the congestion blocking sound from being resonated in the nose.

My latest article in SCAsource on intelligibility in #ataxia

Speech intelligibility refers to how many words can be correctly understood by a listener. Intelligibility can become reduced in ataxia, particularly with longer words.

Speech not only consists of the words we say, but how we say them. That “how” is what is called prosody: the pitch, loudness, and timing of speech. #Ataxia

I’m Speech Science, we talked about how F3 differentiates /r/ from /l/ based on the dip in F3. A student asked me about trilled /r/-anyone know? Does it still have the dip in F3 but just oscillated?

My lab @pittcsd has an immediate opening for a postdoc with specific expertise in fMRI. This position is funded by a recent NIH R01 award (🍾) to study how we prepare our auditory system as we plan and produce speech. More info: https://t.co/sluFxi3WT3.

My fall courses are up on Canvas! When I started teaching in 2020, I watched an amazing youtube video on how to build a Canvas course. They recommended making banners for each course so here are my course banners for the semester! I made them on Adobe Express.

Are you a #medslp👨‍⚕️that use #MBS #VFSS to assess swallowing? How confident are you in identifying anatomic structures? In a recent study @ninazhao and colleagues, only 70% of clinicians could accurately identify the #vocalfolds in the lateral view 🤯 See below for more details!

Pro tip: use the dark band often visible towards the bottom of the larynx as a marker for the #vocalfolds. Anything on, at the level of, or on the underside of the dark band should be considered penetration to the level of the vocal folds #PAS 4-5 (not #aspiration or #PAS 1-3).

#rstats a little tip with case_when() if you want to define conditionally several variables. Don't name the arg and use a tibble on the RHS. I don't believe it's specifically documented but given how vctrs and mutate work it made sense so I tried and it just worked. Great design.
