#6G is coming, even if it's still only on the horizon. But what should regulators start to think about in advance?. Hint: it's not just about #spectrum.- Metrics.- Indoors.- Infra-sharing.- Role of MNOs in 2030+.- Competition.- New tech like AI & sensing.

I'm starting to think a lot more about #6G regulatory themes. What should telecom regulators and policymakers start thinking about *now*, even though 6G is a long way in the future? #Spectrum is...

Today’s winner of the “worst captive WiFi portal” is this hideous example from Purple WiFi at @93FeetEast in London. Whoever thought this was a good idea for a public venue ought to be fired. Into space, ideally.

I’m on vacation . I’ll address this properly when I’m back. There was no “5G race” and it’s alarming that NVIDIA’s boss thinks the US “lost it”. I’m unconvinced that Jensen Huang understands telecoms.
Jensen Huang -. The US lost the 5G wave through technology and policy. The computer industry is “America's national treasure” and no way the US is going to lose it.

@3GPPLive Lots of challenges for NTN & mobile. Phone in pocket? That’s 6/7dB worse signal…. Various 6G enhancements needed for the RAN especially uplink

Love this slide from Moray Rumney, who’s addressing an elephant in the room - @3GPPLive and the increasing disconnection between standards and 5G / 6G deployment reality

Quick post on presentations so far. … good stuff on coverage, shame about the XR and immersive hype. (I’ll give AR/VR a thorough kicking later).

Really good to hear the speakers at #CWTEC #6G all mention indoors & coverage challenges . - Catherine Page from @SciTechgovuk .- Mike Short, @_UKTIN .- @jonesthefone Andy Jones. Shame the venue only has 4G in the auditorium!

Waiting in the queue at Portcullis House to get into today’s @ISPAUK Parliament & Internet conference . Apparently Emmanuel Macron heard I was going to be around, so he’s putting in an appearance at the Houses.Of Parliament as well today too, so it’s super-busy here.

Indian mobile data traffic growth fell to 13% y-on-y in Q1 2025.

Another noteworthy piece of evidence for falling growth of mobile data traffic volumes. The latest stats from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for Q1 2025 shows a year-on-year growth rate...

Telcos need to decouple #AI applications & services development, from work on AI for network automation and OSS/BSS. Timing matters. And those worlds have different speeds.

Thoughts on connecting the unconnected, FWA, spectrum and takeouts from @WAPAonline #WAPALOZA2025. It made me change my view on the role of WISPs, and the importance of unlicensed spectrum for FWA.

I learned a lot at this week's WAPA Wireless Access Providers Association #WAPALOZA2025 in Johannesburg in South Africa. It's given me insight into realities of "connecting the unconnected", nuances...

If this applies to everyone from @SciTechgovuk and perhaps @Ofcom, this is a major negative for UK government engagement. I go to *many* events with government speakers & panellists, as well as hosting my own workshops where I have public-sector participants.
Paranoid control-freakery. “The No10 communications team has banned any official from speaking at events that include question and answer sessions, or where the media are expected to be in attendance.”

No, network slicing is not a substitute for spectrum sharing & private networks . … and it certainly can’t replace other uses of spectrum such as radar or military comms.
rcrwireless.com
5G slicing, argues analyst Dean Bubley, has severe constraints related to its capabilities, maturity and usefulness.

@ekahau @Speedtest @IspFramework Now @TaranaWireless . $2.20 “per home passed” for FWA using 5GHz unlicensed + future 6GHz when it’s available in S Africa. Also beamforming gives some redundancy as allows failover to another base station if one has an issue

@ekahau @Speedtest Presentation from vendor / sponsor @IspFramework Splynx which does billing / OSS software for ISP and WISPs. Notable that it integrates WhatsApp for customer service (important in markets like S Africa) as well as working on ChatGPT

Presentation by @ekahau @Speedtest . It’s been quite slow for ISPs to roll out #wifi7 and #6GHz support, as refresh of home gateways usually takes years
