You don’t need fancy charts to communicate impactful insights from data. In fact, I believe there’s an inverse relationship between the fanciness of a chart and the information it provides.

Metrics should drive data collection, algorithms and architecture not the other way around. “Here’s some data, gimme insights” is backwards. It should be “here’s the metrics we want to effect, what data do we need to collect, model and query?”
