image is truly marvellous, congratulations to our colleagues for this great achievement! Of course we were curious how it compares to our ground-based legacy survey in the same field of view:
1/🥳🌌 Exciting news! We're launching the DESI Early Data Release, featuring spectra from the Survey Validation phase (Dec20 - May21). Immerse yourself in the cosmos with ~750k galaxies from our "1% survey." Keep reading for a journey into the universe! (📹Credits: David Kirkby)
🎉 Breaking Records with DESI! ✨ Last week, our survey achieved a groundbreaking milestone by observing a staggering 40 MILLION SPECTRA! 🔭 This marks the largest spectroscopic sample ever obtained, showcasing the power of DESI's capabilities. 🚀 1/5
After only 7 months we have measured the spectra of 7.5 million galaxies, surpassing the number of all extragalactic spectra ever measured before! GoDESI!

Our BAO measurements agree with Planck ΛCDM (solid line), but indicate a slight preference for evolving dark energy (dashed line) instead of the standard cosmological constant Λ. 5/10

Today is the anniversary of the first year of data collection for our main survey, which started on May 14, 2021! We have already collected 12.8 million extragalactic spectra and the data keeps pouring in at incredible rate! 🎉🎉🎉

After about 10 months, we have observed over 10 million extragalactic spectra! This would have never been possible without our unique focal plane system as explained here by BaoBan, the DESI Coyote:

What do we learn from this map?The galaxy distribution tracks the subtle imprint of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), initial pressure waves frozen in after the universe became transparent. This provides a standard ruler at different cosmic epochs. 2/10

Paper day! Again! 🎉 Yesterday we released a batch of supporting papers in prep (analysis applied to simulations only) for the full-shape analysis yet to come, and also presenting and validating our blinding scheme. Find the papers and explanations at . 1/2
We also measure the BAO signal within the distribution of intergalactic gas. This is illuminated by distant quasars more than 11 Billion light years away, giving rise to Lyman-alpha absorption lines . 3/10

The absorption arises from the excitation of electrons within neutral hydrogen at different redshifts of the intervening gas, causing the so-called “Lyman-alpha forest” in the quasar spectrum depicted here. 4/10
