Culling decisions: Analyze cattle welfare, enhance the bottom line https://t.co/jCcUm9w1L5. Whether beef or dairy, could calling them "market cows" instead of "cull cows" help orient our thinking more toward financial opportunity rather than them being merely a discard?

Gathering cows to diagnose pregnancy is one of many fixtures on a cow-calf production calendar. The day’s primary objective is making a “pregnant” or “open” call, but another priority should be...

Standing in pens or lots heavily contaminated with #manure softens the #skin and provides high #exposure to the causative bacteria. High temperatures and #humidity will also cause the skin to chap and crack, leaving it susceptible to #bacterial invasion. https://t.co/3arnIB9PSA

It sure does (IMO)! The challenge for ethologists is describing it and the affective state(s) experienced by the calf in the cart, and those watching the show. What is it about bedding?!?

Highest prices I've EVER seen on dollar calves, yesterday at the auction here in SW Ontario. Selling on choice, the group of 12 we watched had a range of $350 to $900, and averaged $530!
