The supply of general practice is fundamentally unfair – poorer areas have less funding and fewer GPs. What can national policymakers do to tackle this? We analyse efforts since 1990 to reduce inequity in the supply of GP services & make recommendations. https://t.co/akAEEeARIr

Without deliberate policy action, inequities in the availability of high-quality general practice in England are likely to continue growing, holding back efforts to 'level up' the country.

We MUST restore the functioning universal NHS healthcare system we had in the late 2000s and early 2010s. The issues above need urgent resolution and there are numerous mistakes that must not be repeated ☹️ The NHS has been mended before and it can be again 🙏❤️

🏛️💰We must invest in health. A sicker population is bad economic news and investing in public health @davidjbuck and the NHS has big societal & economic returns (@NHSConfed say £4:£1) - we should have learnt our lessons from COVID + a decade of neglecting population health

☠️ avoid more huge reorganisations (like those visible from 🌌🪐). These have consumed commissioning, political and managerial bandwidth with little discernible improvement in healthcare delivery and must not be entered into lightly again

Practices in deprived area are looking after 10% more patients with 7% less funding compared to practices in affluent areas @HealthFdn These GPs are trying their hardest in the limited resources but this isn’t sustainable and need equitable funding, resources& support
NEW DATA: Inequalities in GP distribution remain as wide as ever. Over the past 7 years, practices in rich areas have gained on 1 day/wk of GP time, but practices in poor areas have lost 1.5 days/wk. Commissioned by @BBCNewsnight #healthinequalities
