We are thrilled to welcome our little baby boy into this world. He was born on 04/13/2024. Both mother and son are doing well. Thanks everyone for their wishes and blessings.
Some personal news! I officially became a US citizen today, more than 11 years after first entering as a full time student. The US is far from perfect, but it remains the best hope for millions like me to turn their dreams into reality with sincere efforts. Let's preserve this.
Tenured! Big thanks to all past and present group members, students, collaborators, sponsors and well wishers around the world. On to bigger things now

Very likely that this solves the problem and explains the data in the Korean preprints. It's just a regular structural phase transition of an impurity and not a quantum phase transition like superconductivity. End of

PIs don't care. They're above all this. But constructive vs aggressively negative criticism can energize vs demotivate a young student who may have written his/her first paper.
To reviewers: Think twice when giving highly negative and even aggressive reviews. You are hurting students and postdocs behind the work, and not the PIs.

This is insane. I got a green card approved within 2 weeks of submission through EB1 premium processing and received it a few months thereafter. This was back in late 2015, right after my PhD completion. There was no backlog at the time. The immigration system is truly broken.
If you were born in India and are considering a Ph.D. in the USA, you should know this.
PhDs had a unique immigration advantage of getting an early green card in the EB1 category.
The EB1 green card category is 6 years backlogged now. That advantage is no longer there.
Congratulations to the IUVSTA EBARA Award winner for 2022, Dr Deep Jariwala.

I resonate with this tweet. Part of the problem I am seeing on this platform at least; is the belittling, distrust and unfair critique from the so-called leaders of field in the west who are acting like "gatekeepers" to this tantalizing claim coming from the east.
Disappointed in general in academia with the overall negative "this can't be right" attitude towards
#LK99
. What happened to a little hope? Yes, it has to be proven, but even if disproven, it's exciting for science! We're like a bunch of disgruntled parents... "B+? Why not A++?"

I am getting 8-10 peer review requests a day from legit journals (both for profit and non-profit professional societies based ones). I still consider myself early-career(ish). Is this normal or is the system collapsing ?

I agree with Eric here. The issue is much broader than IEEE conf./journals. Its society journals vs "prestige" journals (eg. Nature, Science, CellPress) two of which are for profit and boils down to the impact factor/citations game that everyone wants to play. Once the community…
Problem isn't that
@nature
doesn't already publish engineering-like research, it's that papers often make wild claims. In semiconductors, we get
@nature
papers listing incorrectly measured mobility, or performance metrics that wouldn't fly at
@ieee_iedm
Ok. Since the Nobel week is upon us once again, here are my predictions (more like wishes) for the basic sciences.
Physiology/medicine: mRNA vaccines
Physics: photovoltaics or Bell's inequality
Chemistry: reticular chemistry or self-assembly chemistry
Hoping 1/3 comes true.
Any young researcher interested in our lab at
@Penn
on energy materials or related topics ?
Please check out the fellowship below from
@VagelosEnergy
and reach out if you are interested in applying.
Twitter friends, please help spread this message.
Some people outside the US are surprised that so many people need to write so many grants. It's very normal these days in the US that even very senior, established and successful PIs are writing 10 plus grants a year to maintain their group and research levels.
As a PI, approximately how many proposals do you submit a year?
Count those for which you are the PI or M-PI.
Count any proposal: small or large, to a private foundation or a federal agency.
Thank you
Even in this difficult time, I am proud of all the efforts our group and
@JinshuiMiao
