1/ Whether you are a Cold War historian or a casual observer of the news, I commend this written debate to you. In a series of crisp exchanges, four leading experts make their case for whether the US and China are in a cold war. (Short thread)

Some have characterized the intensifying U.S.-China competition as “a new Cold War.” Is this an accurate framing for the relationship?

Does #BRICS pose a credible challenge to the U.S. dollar? #ICYMI @BrookingsInst's @davidrdollar: "China may overtake the U.S. modestly in the next 20 years, but by the end of the century, the U.S. may very well come back, bc of China’s population decline."

Important thread here . . the big impact of a 10% Trump tariff would not be the static deadweight losses, but the end of the trading system -> retaliation against the US, discrimination agst US in other markets, end of GATT rules, and a mess that would be very hard to unwind.

OK, the economics. A flat 10% tariff on imports would hurt the economy, but not as much as some people seem to imagine. Doug Irwin estimates that even 40%-plus 19th century tariffs generally caused deadweight losses <1% of GDP 4/ https://t.co/gwQbOzi1iY.

The Inflation Reduction Act went into effect one year ago Wednesday (Aug 16, 2022). In Korea and Europe, anger quickly emerged when it seemed IRA's tax credits for electric vehicles would discriminate against their exports. Yet US imports of EVs have boomed. What happened? 1/5

Both China and the U.S. act in their own self-interest, and it’s in Biden’s interest to show competence in managing the competitive and complex relationship, especially as an election year approaches. Hear more from @ryanl_hass and @davidrdollar:

China was supposed to see a strong rebound from the pandemic. Instead it's facing deflation, massive debt, and a wobbling housing market.
