5/6 Most arrays had spatially correlated electrode damage, recording performance (SNR) and electrophysiological measures (impedance, noise) using Moran’s I. This suggests underlying biological factors for our results, rather than stochastic manufacturing variability.

4/6 Platinum (Pt) vs. Sputtered Iridium Oxide Film (SIROF): same participant (956 days), 2x single neurons on SIROF. Impedance (Z) correlated with damage (✅SIROF, ❌Pt.), predicted SNR and if an electrode could evoke an intra-cortical micro-stimulation (ICMS) sensation.

3/6 We hypothesize typical electrode degradation begins with cracking of tip or insulation (B-E). Biotic processes erode silicon, leaving fragile tip metal w/o support. Flaking or cracking (F-J) exposes more silicon, erosion of weak lattice nodes causes shank pieces to fall (K-L)

2/6 Quantified five damage metrics: 1) tip metal, 2) insulation, 3) separation between metal/silicon, 4) tissue growth, 5) silicon shaft. We identified a new type of metal degradation ("pockmarked"), predominantly observed on SIROF electrodes; BUT stimulation ~∝ tip metal damage

1/6 BCI devices enable communication and motor control for people with disabilities, by mapping recorded brain activity to control signals. Recording ability decreases with electrode damage, Utah arrays last ~5 yrs. By identifying common failure modes, next gen might last longer.

Really excited to finally get this out! @sarah_wandelt
.@sarah_wandelt et al. introduce a brain-machine interface that can translate intracortical neural activity during inner speech (no movement, no sound) into text in real time. https://t.co/Eqv155cvs8

Still under review, but some interesting data on disregulation of organ systems, innervated by the vagus nerve.
Dysfunction of the vagus nerve in #LongCovid: a comprehensive structural and functional assessment supports a "central pathogenic role" https://t.co/j96FMoSTgc Multiple clinical trials of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation are underway

Haha what a fun meeting!
@BciSociety 2023 meeting was a blast. There is *so* much cool stuff going on in this field that would have felt unthinkable attending my first meeting 10 years ago. Happy I get to share the journey with these weirdos. :)

One of our remarkable participants in the Andersen Lab. Not only is she passionate and dedicated, Nancy is an incredible artist!
Do you know Nancy Smith? With a degree in psychology and an MA in family therapy, she is an artist, author, teacher and mother. After a car accident left her with a spinal cord injury, she also became a BCI Pioneer. Read her story: https://t.co/s5PyeKFOeH

Did you know, that you can build a virtual machine inside ChatGPT? And that you can use this machine to create files, program and even browse the internet?

Breakdown of PhD student cost on a grant: tuition $45K stipend $35K fringe $10K indirects $60K -- total paid by NIH to university: $150K total paid by university to student: $35K (this is just a toy example to illustrate a point, not real numbers but same ballpark)
