"On the feasibility of #glacier preservation" - the title of my World view just out in @NatureWaterJnl
https://t.co/7iVDbFc8OU Simple take-away: No, we can't preserve glaciers artificially at larger scales! But yes, we can partly save them by limiting CO2-emissions.

The amount of data that are inaccessible, despite the push to open science, is mind-boggling. Some data availability statements are almost laughable and would be better stated as "These data are not available". Let's do better.

We must therefore minimize our temperature increases now to preserve our glaciers and avoid the worst impacts associated with sea-level rise.

A great report on Tipping Points came out earlier this week: https://t.co/fkNPZ4oP9L. While tipping points like those observed on parts of the ice sheet do not affect mountain glaciers, growing glaciers takes a lot longer than losing them.

Harmful tipping points in the natural world threaten humanity by disrupting life support systems and societal stability.

Fantastic talks regarding the challenges and impacts associated with various overshoot scenarios, highlighting that once the cryosphere exceed a given temperature threshold, it locks in glacier mass loss and thus contributions to sea-level rise. Highly recommend watching!
"The #cryosphere response is writing history. This is physics. You are locking in a legacy, and that is the legacy of our emissions. If [policy makers and world leaders] act decisively now, we can avoid the worst." @CarlSchleussner @CA_Latest @COP28_UAE
