.@GDSTeam The domains user https://t.co/RbT69Ohdra (for example https://t.co/7Trv6qjETA) that redirect to the Archived Registers seem to have disappeared. Is this a temporary outage? Thanks!

Someone just robbed Waitrose whilst I was at the till paying for my lunch. The cashier raised his eyebrow at the monitor but couldn't do much There were lots of middle-class cries of "He's stolen the Prosecco" from over by the door.

There's every reason for providers being able to provide energy *cheaper* for prepay customers because they don't have to hedge the markets as much and have more committed buying power that they can plan for. The promise of smart meters being "cheaper"/"better" is not born out.

Prepay is traditionally more expensive but in this model there's absolutely no reason why it should be. There's no extra meter to buy & no increase in infrastructure or billing costs for the provider. ...and the provider also has ahead-of-time knowledge of how much energy to buy.

Some of us have been predicting the rise of "remote disconnect via smart meter" for some time but this is even more insidious and wrong: "Rise in energy firms remotely switching homes to prepay meters" https://t.co/y6RvvXHmMD

This is an excellent read for anyone who has ever wondered what all the fuss about DACs in Digital Audio is all about.

This original set of woodblocks was destroyed by fire during the Mongol invasions of Korea in 1232, although scattered volumes printed from these blocks still remain - an example printed in the 11th century is shown here. 11/

The Tripitaka Koreana - carved on 81258 woodblocks in the 13th century - is the most successful large data transfer over time yet achieved by humankind. 52 million characters of information, transmitted over nearly 8 centuries with zero data loss - an unequalled achievement. 1/

The failure of the UK state - and it is a failure of the state - to provide good geolocation services to the emergency services is a) annoying and b) harmful to the emergency services and people who rely on them

"Running a successful open source project is just Good Will Hunting in reverse, where you start out as a respected genius and end up being a janitor who gets into fights." Quote attributed to @cra, and I don't think I've ever seen anything more true posted.

The Orient Express is in London Victoria again. I've not seen it for ages. It's attached to a Diesel engine sporting the name plaque "Queen's Messenger" along with a Deutsche Bahn plaque.

.@British_Airways How do I get someone to engage with me rather than just sending a form response for something I'm not asking about?

i have been playing around and experimenting with histograms and quantile sketches a common theme is some kind of logarithmic bucketing, so the sketch can store a wide range of values with reasonable relative precision, e.g. 1%

i like the look of this UDDSketch algorithm from @rebeljam et al. https://t.co/IgDi1qTUHv https://t.co/LG3V0mND29 similar to datadog’s quantile estimation algorithm, but with bucket collapsing that assumes less about the statistical distribution
