There's lots of debate over what market structure will look like with ePBS. I'm bullish trustless payments because a decentralized network shouldn't need to push 90% of blocks through three geographic chokepoints that just facilitate an offchain auction.

🚨 In our latest EthResearch post, Christoph Schlegel and I suggest a modification to ePBS to mitigate the free-option problem. We propose introducing penalties and adjusting them dynamically in an online learning fashion.

Anyone know of good resources detailing how large validator sets run simultaneous CL clients?

validators should expect a 90% decrease in MEV rewards by opting into preconf protocols.
A New Era - Why?: Turning Ethereum realtime removes the majority of MEV which is traditionally the main source of yield enhancement for Validators. Why would validators bite the hand that feeds them? The main beneficiary of ‘realtime’ however is the blockchain and ecosystem at

And colocation incentives have gotten bad the past couple years. It used to make sense to submit bids across the world, but with faster builders and optimistic relaying, we're now in a spot where network latency can be the difference between profit and subsidy.

The right framing for ePBS is that every builder becomes a relay. If done well, we'll end up with a distributed mesh of builders--and more direct information routes. The alternative, the status quo, is just stacked colocation incentives that lead to capture.

Chokepoints are terrible for CR, but they're also just really inefficient. Until recently it was mostly just North Virginia and France, but look at how much better some cases of information flow get by adding a relay in Japan.

The resilience of PBS is underrated. The diversity of cloud providers and regions used by relays and builders means that mev-boost keeps chugging along despite cloud outages. This should however serve as a wake up call for anyone trying to introduce chokepoints to the system.
AWS sneezed. Crypto caught pneumonia. Coinbase crashed, MetaMask disconnected, L2s went dark. Blockchains kept running - access didn't. 37% of Ethereum on Amazon's servers. Decentralization is a meme. Two outages, six months. We rent sovereignty. Story Below.

Some of the preconf data from yesterday is ugly; proposers that use the protocols missed out on big payouts because of broken market structure + low adoption by builders.
