The future of work is anchored in a shared mission, not a shared physical location. I’m honored to partner with everyone at Zillow (which we call Zall, a wonderful nod to Y’all) to set the standard for workplace culture and excellence in distributed work.

Cloud HQ should empower us all to design extraordinary, dynamic lives, including doing the best work of our lives. We’re designing pilot programs to solve common collaboration and efficiency issues. We’ll listen, measure, iterate, and share.

As someone who cares deeply about this work, I recognize that Zillow is amongst the committed pioneers. It sees itself as a “cloud-headquartered company.”. The philosophical underpinnings of Zillow’s approach are laudable. It works diligently to not enable a two-class system.

I went deep into operator mode with a fellow operational exec, @mkoenig of @tucows, in the latest episode of the Between Two COOs podcast 🎙️.

Small things — intentionally selecting objects in your office background that spur conversation and enhance your ability to be related to — as well as big projects like knowledge management overhauls all contribute to building better work models.

My approach to work is based on a systems-level approach. It's the responsibility of the organization to build and sustain systems that make it easy for work to happen. Frictionless comms and collaboration drives delivery of results, no matter where results are driven from.

Remote work isn't a perk. Remote work isn't a policy. It's an operating model. Even for orgs which do not identify as remote, the reality is that work happens on the internet. It's time to change the narrative.
