Lots more work to be done in reducing unnecessary testing before surgery. Thanks to Jane Brody for including my research in this article and to @JAMACardio and @nagelep1 @PWard35

Cardiac stress tests, X-rays and other medical tests may not provide useful information before operations, and they could cause harm.

Importantly, the two approaches identify different subsets of patients. Combining objective activity data with questionnaires may help refine preoperative risk identification.

However, accelerometer-based models performed similarly to the modified Duke Activity Status Index (AUC 0.79 vs 0.72, p=0.16).

18% of participants (114/640) had reduced FC. Daily step count (5843.9 [2950.4] vs 2988.3 [1757.2] steps per day; P<0.001) and time in moderate-intensity physical activity (118.0 [62.2] vs 59.9 [42.4] min dayโˆ’1; P<0.001) differentiated good vs. reduced FC.

Participants (n=640), who were community dwelling older adults not scheduled for surgery, underwent CPET to measure peakVO2. ActiGraph (wrist) and activPAL (thigh) accelerometers were worn for 7-days.

Wearable accelerometers provide objective measurements of daily physical activity and its unclear if that data can out perform self-report questionnaires like the m-DASI ( https://t.co/BfARlUgCzK)

Can wearables identify older adults with poor functional capacity? Are they better than standard questionnaires? Yes and no. We used the cohort from the study of muscle mobility and aging to try and answer this question in @BJAJournals https://t.co/uCvv7Gnp4R

I gave a student advice not to take a research gap year because... self fund gap year (vs paid as fellow) opportunity cost of 1 year physician wage & most importantly research training more generic & less applicable (vs after residency/fellowship when career more focused)

Walking cadence has been suggested as a measure of activity intensity; however, it remains uncertain if prefrail and frail older adults can increase their walking cadence and if doing so leads to...
