Humbled to have been selected as Professor of the Year by the McGill Political Science Students Association (PSSA). Je suis très heureux d’avoir reçu ce prix. Congratulations to colleagues who received other awards tonight.

I received this message from a
@mcgillu
staff member: “I was on the train home last night. Student in the seat behind me was telling her friend- she is in your class, you are a great professor, your voice keeps her engaged AND she cant wait to start the readings!” Made my day 💗

Happy to announce that, starting in January, I will become the Executive Editor of the Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis. I believe in this journal, in which I have published on several occasions. This is why I’m so excited to join JCPA’s excellent editorial team.

The hard copies of our second edition of the Oxford Handbook of the Welfare State have finally arrived home. The volume features 51 chapters and, at 990 pages excluding the front matter, it’s a pretty big beast 🙂 For more information about the volume see

: universities seldom value book reviews in the humanities and the social sciences. Yet as someone who has published more than 70 of them, I think they are an integral part of scholarly debates and that people who write them learn a lot through the process.
What a terrific book by
@benwansell
and Johannes Lindvall: it came out last year but I only took the time to read it carefully this month. Extremely rich and convincing… and now I even want to work on the topic. It’s that good 😊
Waking up in the middle of the night and, then, furiously writing notes on your phone or laptop because you have a new research idea and you’re afraid you will forget all about it unless you write it down? Welcome to academia :-)

Good luck to my American friends and colleagues on this all-important and stressful Election Day. I will be watching the results closely and I hope the outcome of the presidential race is clear and sound, with a swift resolution.

Exactly 20 years ago, on December 18, 1999, I defended my PhD dissertation. A year ago, on December 18, 2018, I returned to

Pleased to announce that, as of January, I will become Director of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada

Heureux d'annoncer ma nomination en janvier au poste de Directeur de L'Institut d'études canadiennes de McGill.
After granting 30 newspaper, TV and radio interviews in less than 36 hours to more than 20 news organizations located in 10 countries, I would say elections can be a bit exhausting for political science professors :-)

Today was a good publishing day: a revise and resubmit, an article accepted for publication, and a new journal submission. As usual, I updated my CV right away, something I do every time I give a talk, publish a paper, etc. Do you also update your CV as you go?

Very happy to announce that I just received the “2020 Best Annual Reviewer Award” of
@JCPA_ICPA
; I love this journal and I’m excited I will soon become its Executive Editor.
I defended my PHD dissertation 21 years ago today. I remember my defence well. I was really stressed out ahead of it but the defence was liberating and empowering. I love participating in PhD defences as it’s great to see people completing such a long journey.

Awkward to receive CVs for job applications featuring the candidates' picture. I know it's a common practice in other parts of the world but it looks a bit strange when you do this while applying for a job in the US or in Canada :-)

@WrightRhetoric
Of course; when people ask for one of my articles, I send them a copy, regardless of who they are, where they live, etc. I also help friends from the Global South who ask me to send them papers by other scholars because their academic libraries don’t subscribe to some journals.
Last day in

I’m so happy about this new opportunity!

Great work as usual,
@trevortombe
. From an economic standpoint, a PST would be more efficient and raise much more money but it would be far more visible and politically controversial. Do you agree? :-)
Question Period in

starts at 130 pm MST.
By 2 PM MST, I had heard that the premier of my province,

People in Quebec pay nearly twice as much in taxes as people in Alberta, which has no PST and lower income taxes. I know that well because I lived in both provinces but here’s an excellent piece by

Today was the warmest day of the year so far and also the semester’s last day of teaching
@mcgillu
(the exam period starts next week). I gave my last lecture of the semester this morning. I will be on sabbatical in 2024-2025, which will start with a

I just received hard copies of the second edition of our « Advanced Introduction to Social Policy », which is now out: This revised edition was updated to take into account recent scholarship and the impact of COVID-19.

#Montreal
is a lovely city and I’m glad to be back. Once I have settled in my new office, I will post about forthcoming

activities, including our 2019 conference.
A few days ago my co-authors and I completed a paper and I said I would wait until January 1 to submit it to the journal. I did this morning at 12:01 am, as I had entered all the info and downloaded the files the previous day); I hope we will be assigned manuscript number 001 :-)
@ellenmkey
This is outrageous; it makes me sick to my stomach. I’m happy that your paper is now in print but I think the editor in question should personally apologize to you and your colleagues. This is not a way to treat fellow academics and the gendered aspect of this story is sickening.
I thought my last lecture of the semester today. Quite a few students came to see me after class to tell me how much they enjoyed the class. When you teach it’s sometimes hard to tell how students feel so this kind of feedback is appreciated :-)

This is how I would do it: write the response before you revise the main document; it will give you confidence and help you plan for the revision process. Then, once the revisions have been enacted, update the response so as to reflect the actual revisions you made. Good luck!!!
