Two years in and I don’t see how the music industry has made any changes in response - we can’t play live and we can’t press vinyl and we can’t sell CDs and we’re not paid enough or fairly for streaming. Change isn’t coming from the top and it won’t unless we force it from below

7.6M streams = $22,800. We own our masters so we keep 100%, divided by 3 band members = $7,600 income for 2021. Did you know we got a 10.0 on @pitchfork ? To calculate your own #SpotifyUnwrapped multiply streams by $0.003, divide w/label and bandmates

Streaming is killing music, to borrow a phrase from the major labels of yore. But as Trent Reznor highlights here, it’s not the technology at fault, it’s the financialization of it. We can change that and rebuild a more equitable and sustainable environment for recording artists

Musicians’ expectations are so low, I’ve been shamed for complaining that Galaxie 500 made $33,440 for 8.8 million streams on Spotify this year. There are 3 of us in that band, so that’s $11,147 per musician (gross, not net). What are your expectations, and what should they be?

Today, Spotify announced more payola and no more pay than before ($0.0030 a stream). It will also now look more like TikTok - meaning without bribing them for placement in the algorithm’s vertical feed, artists will have even less of a chance of making this platform work for them

At a penny per stream, you still need 250,000 streams a month to earn the equivalent of a $15/hr job. We aren’t asking for a free lunch. We’re demanding to be paid a minimum for our work. Music made Spotify a $50billion company. And Spotify is not sharing that with musicians
