We see this playing out now with @ZohranKMamdani, branded too far left by centrist Dems because of his past remarks… yet right now, everyone against Trump and authoritarian creep from @GavinNewsom to Mamdani is on the same side.

And we need to move past dunking on Dems who said “defund” in 2020. Most have since shown nuance. Can’t we agree it was a well-intentioned sentiment that didn’t translate to practical policy? We’ve learned and are moving on (I say this as someone who did the dunking previously).

…it’s beyond even an over-correction. The right is testing the limits of power. DC leaders spent 2023–24 rebalancing our CJ ecosystem with good results. There’s always more to do, but this isn’t it.

It’s not that we in DC are against the troops. We certainly wanted them on Jan 6th during an actual *checks notes* national emergency. I’ll be the first to say our leaders missed the mark with well-intentioned CJ reform in 2020. But what’s happening now isn’t a correction….

In more joyful news: one of the things I love most about this city is how small it can feel & how our local leaders support & show up for small biz. Things can always improve, and we can always expect more of our government, but the people here are truly sweet (pun intended) 🍨

We *could* drive crime to near zero by deploying officers & troops on every block. But at what cost? Courts already describe their conduct as “illegal.”. How many unlawful stops, arrests that don’t hold up in court, & masked agents are worth what’s likely a temporary reduction?.

An update from 14th today. If your issue is street vending, let's have that conversation, enforcement, regulation & otherwise. But my point to those cheering on the Feds for using fear & intimidation: that's a temporary show of force with temporary results, not governance.
