Now here is some actual critique! Fully agreed. I appreciate its origins as parody and satire, but played straight is more fun. It's "rule of cool" taken to an illogical extreme, and that's great too.
@cunningman31 @Dolfijnmanjohns @HMBohemond There's also the fact that it's simply not as "fun" to play it as satire. You get some limited chuckles out of the shit cribbed from judge dredd but you get way more mileage out of the setting by just playing it straight as a dark gothic space fantasy.

Conservatives broadly do not make good art so I run into that problem less. But yeah of course. I can play Call of Duty without co-signing onto the military industrial complex. I can also recognize it as at best an unintentional piece of US propaganda.

It's fun you bring that up about Tolkien, because that is an extremely political motivation. The British empire was collapsing, and national pride was low. He wanted to create an origin myth for the British people that could be held the same way other older cultures.

Oh yeah. Lucas had a lot of artistic inspirations! But those inspirations have their own political context too. Kurasawa's works often depict the horror of war, the cycle of violence, and a general critique of centralized power. This carried over to Star wars strongly
@cunningman31 @PCMachineSpirit @HMBohemond Not really, or not just only George was fan of Flash Gordon, older scifi-shows, and also the Hidden Fortress and other Kurosawa movies, and he wanted to make his own movies And Tolkien wanted to make an epic for the english people

See you are almost there. Sit in the head of the artist and ask the "why". Sometimes it's just "I'm horny and I like explosions", but isn't a story better when you learn something? Thought about a thing? Not everything should be hype moments and aura, right?
