TLDR: we report brain-wide maps in aperiodic activity, its relation to age-related variability in memory, and novel structure-function relationships, findings which are critical for understanding brain development and aging in both health and disease!

But what about cognition? Well, we have that covered, too! We found, again in PFC, as well as fusiform gyrus, that aperiodic slopes predict episodic memory, and that this effect is modulated by age!

A lot of existing work on aperiodic activity examines task-related and resting-state activity in isolation; here, we directly compared the two, finding task-based differences in slopes across age localized specifically to prefrontal cortex (PFC).

We also find that aperiodic slopes flatten with age into young adulthood in both association and sensorimotor cortices, challenging models of early sensorimotor development based on brain structure.

We reveal regional differences in both the aperiodic slope and offset, and that these electrophysiological measures correlate with brain structure!
