Executive Director, Community on the Rise ~ Bham, AL | Reminding our homeless community of their Worth & Power through Healing, Housing, Education, & Employment
Birmingham, AL
Joined December 2015
We often assume people living homeless don’t have jobs. Not true. They often work in our hotels, restaurants, & warehouses. Affording rent in Alabama at minimum wage requires working 87 hours/week! 7.25/hr. doesn’t add up to end homelessness for workers.

Only 9% of plastics are recycled globally. We’re the ONLY nonprofit recycling #5 plastic waste in Birmingham, AL, & we hire people experiencing homelessness to do it. OUR community is creating more recycling options for Alabama! #recycle #poverty #earth

Recycling may seem like the perfect way to prevent excess waste, but what percentage of recycled products actually gets recycled?

Recycled plastic ornaments in the making! This beautiful maker burned her finger in the midst of creating. She kept going, explaining that the incident just reminded her of where to place her fingers to avoid a burn next time. Survivor wisdom & strength for the win❤️ #recycle

Our community is full of individuals experiencing deep poverty and homelessness. Who also share great joy. And jokes. And sometimes show up to cut our overgrown grass...just because it needs cutting. #thatsourcommunity #thatswhywearerising #wedothingsforeachother

Jennifer working on Java Script...I think. She’s a computer whiz & I’m...not. Jennifer is working to escape homelessness, but poverty is HEAVY. Let’s help with the heavy lifting by speaking out against stereotypes of homelessness. #maybejavascript #poverty #socialimpact

Orcas & Wolves: fierce•big•predators. Also Orcas & Wolves: bonded•caretakers•reliant on each other. Which is celebrated more? “We grow up believing that if we admit that we need each other, we are not strong. But we were never meant to go it alone.” -Dr. Vivek Murthy

Cool article about Miss Electra-look closely at our logo to see if you can find her! One thing we like to say about Electra in our community: “Yeah, Vulcan - he watches over the city. But Electra? She watches over the streets.” https://t.co/8tkQbIICHt

She’s tall. She’s golden. She’s holding lightning bolts. Oh, and she’s naked. Still, she somehow manages to go unnoticed by many Alabamians.

Here’s a little #communitywisdom for your Monday! We say “you belong here & WE BELONG TO EACH OTHER. It’s a reminder that we are each important and valuable. It’s a commitment to walk life’s journey together...come triumph & tragedy. It’s a promise that you are seen & heard.

Thanks @now_bham for including Community on the Rise amongst these amazing nonprofit organizations you profiled. We are honored and grateful for this opportunity to share our story and our work!
These orgs support one of #BirminghamAL's most vulnerable populations. You can be a part of the work too by helping with places like @BhamSalvArmy + @jcsplacevet and more. ❤️ https://t.co/E7z6gaiF20

Two of my favorites! Can not wait to listen to this!
I recently discussed #HowToBeAnAntiracist with @BreneBrown who has spent her career revealing the power of vulnerability and empathy, which we need in this moment to be antiracist and build an antiracist society. This is a conversation I won't forget.

Amidst pandemic & protest is our community. Racism is a MAJOR cause of homelessness & negative health outcomes for African Americans. We are as driven as ever to act on Cornel West’s words: “Justice is what Love looks like in public.” #BLACKLIVESMATTER #poverty #BirminghamAL
