My point is that these are investments that are supposed to protect us on bad day, when things are unstable, and when we need tools and processes urgently. It is shortsighted to think we can protect the US and our allies with offensive weapons alone. 5/5.

And what if we fear that material is out of national control and crossing borders? Sorry, those working with ~100 countries to improve detection at ports and borders are being cut another 20%. 4/5.

Not to mention the office that supports international inspectors on the ground in Iran providing the world with first-hand information, is cut by another $6 million, after a reduction already in 2025. These experts also support safe expansion of nuclear energy globally. 3/5.

The Mobile Packaging Program is the cavalry we would need. Very unfortunate that the office that manages this is slashed by more than $53 million in the president's 2026 budget request. 2/5

Don't forget that foundational investments in @NNSANews nonproliferation capabilities mean we have off-the-shelf tools for out-of-the-ordinary situations. With at least 400 kgs of enriched uranium in the wind, what would a regime collapse mean for global security? 1/5.

Good to talk to former colleagues and friends, but even better that they are knowledgeable and insightful!.
I spoke with NTI's Eric Brewer and Carnegie's Corey Hinderstein about military action against Iran's nuclear sites, the future of the nuclear program, and broader nonproliferation implications of last week's events. Link below:

I very much hope the traditional bipartisan support in congress for @NNSANews’s nonproliferation mission will result in a restoration of funding.
Slashing nuclear nonproliferation funding, as the Trump administration has requested, would be, for the U.S., “a recipe for national security failure.”. @CoreyAH on why, in her latest for Emissary:

It will be very interesting to see how Russia engages with Iran in light of their January 2025 Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. I can’t imagine Putin would be happy about any requests that would undermine military objectives in Ukraine.

While I expect Iran to take drastic action, withdrawing from the nuclear nonproliferation treaty and possibly its IAEA safeguards, even less definitive action will come with significant uncertainty. It will be hard to ever, from this day forward, know if we know everything.

Waking in Europe to the news from the Middle East. The attack by Israel on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure seems as inevitable as it was avoidable.

Crossed the @BrimleyLine today. Feeling pretty good, despite not finding any alien eggs in the hotel pool. Thanks @dallascowboys and @CowboysTravel for the amazing weekend!
