Constraint…Command…Execution
When you have the ability to command with elite level pitches, there’s a high likelihood that good things will happen. A development driven plan and an insatiable desire to compete…we are 19 days away!
@RiceBaseball
Very fun
#longtoss
progression with this 2022 LHP. The kneeling start forces heel contact, glute/hip activation, while a long, loose arm is driven by the hip/shoulder separation and rotation. Then putting it all together at the end.

When I’m scouting a pitcher, assessing movements & current/future skill levels is the easy part. Determining mental make up and performance motivators is the real 🔑. Without the right mental components, the physical stuff will never be fully utilized.
I could give you the metrics, which are elite, but I think it’s best you just turn up the volume 🔊 and enjoy.
@RiceBaseball
pitchers came back ready to get after it! Can’t wait to see more today!
Aggressive, efficient rotation is a beautiful thing.
These are all clips that I use to help show athletes what the primary objective of movement is.
Perceived Effortless Power.
@FlatgroundApp
This is what a fall season’s worth of
@TrackManBB
data reports looks like for
@RiceBaseball
pitchers.
2 full 4” binders containing Intent pens, Live ABs, Scrimmages: all collected, all analyzed, and action plans created/adjusted.
The blending of art (individual mechanics/feel) and science (biomechanics/analytics) in the pitching development process is what makes this job so much fun!
What we are going to accomplish with the
@RicePitchingLab
is going to change the game.
You don’t need your best stuff every day to be successful.
You need confidence and have trust in your ability to execute.
When you have those two things and your stuff is at it’s best, you see your full potential.
Be good at being good to see how good you can really be.
Awesome email sent from a kid who listened in on Monday night on the call with
@baseballifer11
.
This is one of the cooler aspects of my job. We get to impact kids in a multitude of ways.
@Hootem11
can probably answer what Omaha smells like.
@RiceBaseball
will be back there soon.
Come to
@RiceUniversity
for the world class education and
@RiceBaseball
player development…stay for the incredible food that Houston has to offer. I mean, this city’s food scene is ridiculous. Infinite delicious options!
A few more pieces of the puzzle:
We have stadium & mobile
@TrackManBB
units and
@Sony
RX10 cameras (Edgertronic cameras too) for pitch tracking and slo-motion video capabilities at home, on the road, or in the lab.
@RiceBaseball
isn’t messing around about player development.
I have compiled a set of standardization benchmarks for development and performance metrics/stats to help coaches and athletes better assess growth. Feel free to check it out and discuss. Nothing is proprietary, just information!
@FlatgroundApp
This is a special place.
The amount of former
@RiceBaseball
players who are coming back to do their off-season training along with a plethora of other pros utilizing these awesome facilities, and now the new
@RicePitchingLab
. It doesn’t get better than this.
Huge shoutout to our friends at
@MarucciSports
for the gorgeous customized fungos for the coaches here at
@RiceBaseball
Our players can’t wait for their gloves to come in for the spring…we are going looking clean in 2022!
The flamingo throw is an easy way for pitchers to identify their natural arm slot, rotational pattern, and teach lead leg posting. W/ verbal cues and directional constraints it has been a great benefit to the athletes who have tried it.
@FlatgroundApp
Attention baseball players:
If it is your goal to play college/pro baseball, and you don’t actually watch college/pro baseball, you are doing it wrong.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
@FlatgroundApp
HS Pitchers:
It’s time to put the ball down (competitively) and get the weights moving. This is the most important time of the year for physical development. The work that you put in during the fall/winter will dramatically effect your spring/summer.
Get strong. Throw hard.
There may not be a better background in college baseball than the one at Reckling Park. Thanks to everyone who came out last night, looking forward to next weeks games!
@RiceBaseball
Command work begins at the onset of catch-play.
Do not expect to warm up with poor command focus and think that pin-point control will magically appear when you are throwing max effort vs a hitter.
Every throw must have a purpose.
@FlatgroundApp
Big time performance for
@archdaddy45
throwing a CG shutout to move his
@GTBaseball
team to a regional final and keeping the arms fresh! Dude is a competitor, and this was awesome to watch! Worthy of a
@PitchingNinja
shoutout!
There is so much happening here and the energy behind us is incredible.
When we unveil the Phase 1 upgrades, it will drop your jaw.
This is going to be an incredible journey and an elite destination for players looking to develop and move to the next level.
The new era of
@RiceBaseball
is underway with
@cruz22
at the helm. We are building from the winning-rich traditions and evolving into something very special. This is where you will develop as an athlete and an individual.
Come see what’s happening.

Progress in the
@RiceBaseball
Pitching Lab!
@AMTI_MultiAxis
plates 🔜,
@KinaTraxInc
MoCap cameras in shortly thereafter and the rest is gravy! A few more pieces that will remain 🤫for a while, but this will be one of the best and most comprehensive pitching labs in the country!
It’s official! My wife and I finally got moved down to Houston from San Antonio this weekend. We can’t wait to see what the Rice community has in store!
You are never as good as your best game…
You are never as bad as your worst game…
Persistence in the search of Sustainable Success through your Process…that’s where you find out who you really are.
With Cyber Monday and the holidays coming up, this is a great time to invest in your own player development tool box. Here’s a list of great tools that can fit a wide variety of budgets.
@FlatgroundApp
A little bit of rain doesn’t stop the pitchers at
@RiceBaseball
from getting in their work to prepare for tomorrow’s scrimmage vs UH. This group is exceptionally thoughtful in their work and take extreme ownership of their routines.
Another 🔑🧩 to the pitching development program here at
@RiceBaseball
that will go 🤝 with the
@KinaTraxInc
biomechanics and
@TrackManBB
pitch tracking in the new pitching lab and our ability to streamline through
@DrivelineBB
TRAQ.

99.4...That’s one way to finish off a velo program. Big time bullpen PR for
@jackneely00
in preparation for
@OhioStateBASE
. Lived 96-97 and let it eat for the finisher!

There are some really big things coming to
@RiceBaseball
…things that will be the envy of every program around the country and will make the Owls’ program the gold standard of player development…just wait.
Moving the feet in a simple QB shuffle is a great way to promote athleticism and generat energy from the ground up to lessen the effort on the arm without lowering intent. These are the first throws of the long toss session. Arms working really well.
@FlatgroundApp
@jaegersports
Attention
@RiceUniversity
colleges/student body: We would love to see every one of you tomorrow night at Reckling Park for the
@RiceBaseball
Friday Night Lights game. Bring the energy!
First pitch is @ 6:30 pm.

18 more days until
@RiceBaseball
players report back on campus for class, 36 until first team practice, 57 until opening day.
In the meantime, please enjoy this nasty 2-seam FB in beautiful edgertronic slow motion…
Medical assessments and PT screenings ☑️
Can’t expect to optimize development if you don’t know where you’re starting from at an individual level.
Next up:pitcher’s meetings 🦉🔥⛽️🎯
Today’s throwing progression into a bullpen with
@TCU_Baseball
commit
@StormHbaseball
. Building energy from the ground up, focusing on breathing and timing, unleashing on

There’s a reason he’s one of the top 2020 arms in the country.

I receive dozens of awesome emails daily from prospective athletes wanting to learn more about
@RiceBaseball
.
Unfortunately, for these PSAs who are younger than C/o 2023, I cannot respond.
Please make sure you attach contact info for coaches in your emails!
Very simple way to clean up arm action and promote better rotation, extension, and lead leg posture is to work from narrow stance and bare majority body weight on front leg. Cue “simplicity”/“whippy rotation” and progressively increase distance to tolerance.
@FlatgroundApp
Tomorrow marks the 1 week countdown to the
@RiceBaseball
season opener. Can’t wait to see the Owls fans out in force on the road and then the following week when we open up at Reckling Park!
#Hootem
The
@RiceBaseball
boys looked sharp on the bump this week in the fall exhibition game. A couple more weeks of valuable development time and then we set our sights on the spring season!
ATL has been real! Lot of good players seen and hopefully some
#FutureOwls
identified! Back to TX and then off to LA to find some more!
We will find 🦉 wherever we need to!
The work that Rick Karasch does w/ our team from a strength & conditioning prospective, and paired with his work with
@RobertaAnding
for our team’s nutritional needs, it’s no wonder we have seen the growth that we have this fall.
Great people make this process work!
@RiceBaseball
One of my favorite cues is “get violent through release” to let the pitcher know that all-out-speed is the best way to translate their athleticism.
@UTSABSB
commit
@rward_10
does this really well...which is why he throws absolute fireballs🔥
@FlatgroundApp
What works for one pitcher may not work for another.
How one pitcher understands a drill, another may have an completely different interpretation.
Two pitchers throwing the same grip can yield two different pitches.
Know yourself. Be a master of your skills.
Just got my copy of “Committed”
The work that
@baseballifer11
and
@TheGrok
put into this is incredible and I’m hopeful my contributions will be valuable for parents and athletes.
A couple big leaguers rolling through the
@RicePitchingLab
today. It’s an incredible resource not only for
@RiceBaseball
but for any pro or amateur pitcher seeking elite level information, biomechanics & pitch metrics.
There are two types of “comfortable” when you are an athlete.
One comes from confidence, the other comes from complacency.
Confidence can endure adversity.
Complacency crumbles from adversity.
